Report this review Had many different cars but hadnt had anything like a 'hot hatch' since the 80's so had a breif spell of madness and bought one of these... My last fast car was a mx5 turbo and I wasnt expecting to much of the clio 182 to be honest. Downsides this may be a good thing but find the car relatively sluggish anywhere below the magic 5000 rpm area and yes obviously the car is variable valve so supposed to be like that but you find unless thrashing this car there is just a distinct lack of power below 5000 rpm excessively so, but and a big but!!! thrash this through the not so great gear box from 5000 to 7500 rpm and it goes like stink its a shopping trolly on rails ,shocking handling it just grips on for dear life bit like my hands on the steering wheel! Honestly I havent driven this near to its capabilities on corners.I am used to rear wheel drive but this car for a frontwheel drive is just like glue on the road and am sure I will be lifting the back wheel up soon ! Word of advice !, rear lights check them out as they rust on the contacts mine at the moment puts a fault on the traction control whenever I reverse and know its down to the rear light wiring (been to scrap yards seen a few with cut rewired lights!) The renault clio 182 and its siblings are a strange cult choice of car, it does have foibles. I love the interior the spec and extras as standard is staggering renault just threw in every extra ,climate, cruise, auto lights, auto wipers etc etc etc the renault sport rs seats are nice hugging and leather side bolsters hold you in well around those corners and the suade inserts stop you sliding about when your pulling thos g'forces around corners , overall very nice seats. Plastic trim not so good but bearable again this is a silly cheap car! For the money this has to be the cheapest fastest you can buy and has to be the ultimate wolf in sheeps clothing ,it doesnt really look much different to some specced up standard clios just a closer look especially from rear 3/4 you see the twin exhaust lower stance and roof spoiler all subtle but classy even if many think its a 1.2 hatch you have done a really good job customising :) If you dont want to be gawped at but do want a very very fast hatch then this is a steal buy one now 182bhp in a frontwheel drive rollerskate is more than enough thankyou :) Read Guest's full review and ratings (438 words) Guest 27th Jun 2010 Reviewer rating: Guest's review has yet to be rated - Be the first! Id had a vts before but wanted that bit extra and buy god did i get that bit extra, i love the clio its my little baby, i got white 5 spoke alloys on it and stripes running down bodywork, it looks like you can imagine it to look. Report this review I have owned a clio 182 now for about 2 years and it has been great car to drive. My one has the cup pack on it which has the cup spoiler,grey alloys and cup suspension. I simply love it, even after over a year of owning mine I still find myself finding reasons to jump into it and go for a drive. I have not had any problems of yet with mine and its great fun. I love driving it and it turns alot of heads to. I have the french racing blue. Report this review Renault Clio 2.0 182 Sport 16V is a very good handling car that needs good quality tyres on it. I put cheap tyres on it once i wouldnt do it again it ate them in 8000 miles. Auto lights packed up after waranty and the front discs were badly worn by 29000. Good on fuel on long runs but a bit noisy. Apart from that i havent had any problems just make sure the oil has been changed at least once a year i find it runs smoother with carlube triple R 5/40. Paint work is very soft so chips are common. The big horsepower claim, the French hot hatch manufacturer, the high hopes, the marketing bad chat; but Peugeot's bid for hot hatch greatness with the 206 GTI 180 ended in mild disappointment. Any chance things might go the same way with Renault's reply to the beefy Pug, the Clio 182? You might well have already guessed the answer, but let's find out if you're right. Let's get the bad news out of the way first, though. There isn't going to be a specific Cup version of the feistiest Clio, no stripped-out trackday special. But hold fire with the despair for now, because I reckon you're still going to end up liking this little Renault. The changes to the 2004 Clio run a lot deeper than the 182 title suggests. The motor is indeed up on power compared with the outgoing model (the new output is 182ps, which is 179bhp, at 6500rpm), but that's not just down to a bit of judicious chipping. Much of the horsepower hike is due to an extensively revised exhaust system. The 172 used a four-into-one manifold whilst the 182 employs a 4-2-1 system that improves gas flow. Further down the system, there's a revised metallic catalyst that improves matters further, and the twin tailpipes now emerge with a bit of a gap between them, mimicking those of the Clio V6. The 182's chassis is similarly more extensively changed than you'd expect. Its wheelbase is slightly longer than the 172's and it also has a wider track. The wheelbase change has come about because of increased castor angle, which is now the same as the Clio Cup racecar's. The rear anti-roll bar is now stiffer and even the suspension mountings have been strengthened to cope with the additional cornering loads. All of which gives a big hint about this car's focus. Springs and dampers have also been reworked. Spring rates are up 10 per cent, whilst dampers are stiffer in compression, softer in rebound - the thinking behind the softer rebound is undoubtedly to improve traction. This attention to mechanical detail is a revelation in an age when many makers resort to electronics to hold a flaky chassis together. Now here's the rub. For the Clio 182 you really want, Renault asks you to hand over an extra 200 notes for the 'Cup' chassis option. It's a form of blackmail because if you buy a 182 without it you'll regret it. The option involves a 3mm lower ride height, spring rates up a further 20 per cent at the front and 15 per cent at the rear, and even tricker Michelins. Michelin rubber has become a key component in the performance of many recent models, although it does have downsides; standing water, for instance, in the case of the M3 CSL and cold weather problems on Porsche's Carrera GT. The new Michelin Exalto 2s on the Clio 182, however, are useable all day, every day, allowing the potential of the chassis to be fully exploited, for longer. The combination of the Exalto 2 and the optional 'Cup' chassis is an absolute killer. The headline figures don't do it justice. The 179bhp motor, a 0-60mph of 7.1sec and a 139mph maximum aren't shabby, but you'll not conquer the Civic Type-R or Focus RS in a bar-room contest. Meet one of them out on the road and it'll be an entirely different story... Chassis details aside, one fundamental advantage the Clio has over all credible opposition is that it's significantly lighter. At 1080kg it's 120kg less weighty than the Civic and undercuts the Focus RS by the best part of 200kg. Balance-wise the chassis is on the ever-so-slightly-nervous side of neutral. Its relatively light weight and the Michelin tyres mean this Clio changes direction better than any front-wheel-drive car I've ever driven. It adopts that super-aggressive, tarmac- rally-car, flat-cornering patter - body roll is virtually non-existent. The brakes have a feel and ability that teaches every other manufacturer, bar Porsche, a lesson in how to stop a car. I had the pads on fire, literally, and yet the brakes refused to fade. The speed the 182 can carry into a corner is simply phenomenal for a road car, but the ability to drive at this level comes at a price; any driver error now happens at higher velocities than before. It's not that the Clio wants to bite you, it's just that it doesn't suffer fools and you can't feed it mixed messages - once you're committed to a corner, it's best you stay committed. Despite that slight caveat, Renault has created a driving tool that's everything we all wanted the Peugeot 206 GTI 180 to be. If you're building a hot hatch, this is the new benchmark. Ford and Vauxhall, don't say you haven't been warned! Renault is the new king of asphalt. In fact, so good is the Clio 182 with the Cup chassis set-up that I feel moved to make a bold statement - I think it's the best hot hatch ever built. However this is a much pricier option with a UK price tag £15,495. Conclusion ---------- Overall, this is a fast fully loaded car with a stunning specification and a performance to match. It certainly offers far better value for money than its latest [4th generation-1998 onwards] VW badged partner Golf Gti (1.8T which costs £18,000 producing only 15Obhp). A SEAT is £5000 cheaper with an extra 6 bhp and a high specification and performance to match. Prodigious speed, bags of grip and an adjustable chassis gave it a place in our hearts alongside the Peugeot 205 GTi. And we liked the stripped-out Cup version even more – enough to pick it over the £1500 costlier Mini Cooper S. Delve a little more deeply into tradition, and it's not difficult to find hot Clios of worthy mettle. The Clio Williams line included a succession of hot hatches leading back to a 1993 original that was blisteringly quick, handled sweetly, and with its gold alloys and blue dials, was a superb-looking car to boot. If you're insurance broker baulked at the prospect of a group 17 rating, there was also the less-well-known Clio 16v - a more ordinarily-styled hatch that would run the hotter Williams surprisingly close on performance. Look below that, and you'd find a 1.8-litre Clio RSi that, for its slightly tamer pace, still proved a real livewire; we rated it more higly than better known rivals like the Ford Fiesta XR2i, Peugeot 106 XSi, Citroën AX GTi and Vauxhall Corsa GSi.
