Then post details here. I intend to send Renault UK and SA a monthly copy of all the details on this topic in the hope that they will recognise that something has to be done. It's not just the fact that it costs an arm and a leg when cars are out of warranty and turbos and engines fail, but the very obvious fact that those ignorant of the situation will find that in two or three years down the road, the value of their dCi engined cars will have dropped like the proverbial brick. At least Renault has recognised the problem by shortening the service times on new models. Hopefully through this Forum enough pressure would be brought to bear so that unfortunate Renault dCi owners could get the necessary parts after a blown turbo/engine at cost price, if their car is out of warranty. 03.07.05 Just in case that what I have said earlier is difficult to comprehend, please just post the details of the turbo problems that you have had with your engine, not ones that you think might happen in the future! 13.12.08 I WILL NOT RESPOND TO POSTS WHERE MEMBERS HAVE OBVIOUSLY NOT READ TOPIC 1 AND PROVIDED FULL DETAILS - IT'S JUST TOO TIME CONSUMING ! I DON'T CARE IF YOU CAN'T SEE THE POINT BECAUSE I CAN. 07.08.05 Renault has now announced changes regarding blown Garrett Turbos and engines on 1.9dCi (F9Q) engines. This involves the fitting of new turbos, turbo bearing oil feed pipes, intercoolers and a change of oil specification. There are also changes in the way that dealers have to handle goodwill claims. I will endeavour to find out what the situation is regarding this. 14/02/06 It is possible that Renault is having a change of heart about the percentages being paid out under the Yellow OTS Scheme. Watch this space! News to come about Yellow OTS Scheme I strongly suspect that Renault may announce that it will make 100% payments on those Lag ll 1.9dCis that have suffered turbo failure out of warranty and meet the Yellow OTS Scheme criteria. Check with your dealer ASAP! 16.02.06 (Updated 28.02.06) I have just spoken to RCS who confirmed that the Yellow OTS Scheme for Laguna ll 1.9dCis meeting the specific criteria has been improved to 100% Parts & Labour! However the exact details should be confirmed to an owner of an eligible car in writing. Meanwhile confusion seems to reign as usual! Different owners of eligible cars have been told different things. The criteria supp**** by RCS are as follows: 1. Cars must have full service history with services carried out as per Renault's official service schedule. Changes in the law have meant that cars do not have to have been serviced at franchised dealerships but Renault service parts and a suitable oil grade must have been used . 2. Mileage at time of failure must be less than 90,000. 3. Car must be less than 4 years old (from date of first registration) at the time of failure.*** 4. Number of owners does not affect the scheme as it relates to the car not to the owner. 06.05.06 ***I believe that Renault has extended the Yellow OTS scheme to cover both M�gane and Sc�nic l & ll 1.9dCis and possibly other 1.9dCi (F9Q) engined cars as well . Furthermore the criteria have been altered to include cars up to 5 years old. The 90,000 mile limitation remains. 25.07.06 I understand from VOSA that Full Renault Service History is not required in order for cars to meet the Yellow OTS scheme. However the service schedule must have been adhered to. VOSA has noted that Renault is doing something about the situation of failing turbos in 1.9dCis but I suspect that it is still concerned that nothing is actually being done until the unit has failed. In my view Renault needs to set up a programme so that cars that are potentially affected can be checked over. After all it's far safer to be sure than sorry - or dead for that matter. 23.02.07 It seems that confusion still reigns - whether this is organised confusion or otherwise remains to be seen! Owners of 1.9dCi (F9Q) engined cars other than Laguna ll are being informed that their cars are not eligible for the scheme. It is my clear understanding that when the French Transport Ministry called in Renault SA about this problem, a meeting at which VOSA was present, the details of the schem were laid down. Cars eligible at the time were Laguna lls that had not exceeded 150,000 kilometeres (93,206 miles), were not older than 5 years and had a correct service history history. The scheme was later extended to ALL F9Q engined vehicles according to the appropriate authorities . It is absolutely scandalous that Renault dealers in the UK have either not been given full details or are deliberately misleading owners. 25.10.07 There has now been a rash of 2.2dCi turbo failures and combined with the fact that Renault UK does not appear to be honouring the "Paris Agreement" when it was agreed by Renault SA that F9Q engined cars that had suffered turbo or turbo + engine failure would be covered - 100% Parts & Labour!. It now seems that there were a number of variations of this engine (14+?) and Renault will only cover certain ones. Which ones nobody seems to know! Hopefully VOSA who attended the "Paris Agreement" which took place at the French Transport Ministry quite sime time ago, will be able to shed some light on this. What will happen about the 2.2dCi engine I do not know as yet. 29.10.07 VERY IMPORTANT NOTICE The following is an extract from a VOSA email that I received some months ago: "Our understanding is that Renault will cover all costs on Renault vehicles fitted with a F9Q engine, that is Laguna ll up to 24/06/03, Megane ll and Scenic ll up to June 2003 that are less than 5 years old with a mileage less than 150,000kms (90,000 miles). Circa 33,385 vehicles might be affected. Additionally, Renault are requesting details of servicing - particularly that the correct specification oil has been used - if this has not been conducted in the approved dealerships." Please note that thes are VOSA's own words and have not been edited in any way. You should bear in mind that registration date is post manufacturing date. It is the manufacturing date that is critical in this instance. If you have had a catastrophic turbo and/or engine failure and you feel that this has put you and others in danger you should inform VOSA. Details are as follows: Vehicle & Operator Services Agency Vehicle Safety Branch Berkeley House Croydon Street BRISTOL BS5 0DA Tel: 0117 954 3300 Mark your communication for the attention of Jeffrey Sweeting. No xxxx xxx INADVERTENT LOSS OF POWER THROUGH TURBO & (and if applicable) SUBSEQUENT ENGINE FAILURE Email me via the Board (just click on my name) and I will advise you further as I wish to have copies of all letters sent to VOSA for evidential purposes. Do not email or phone VOSA as it has a tendency not to log email or calls and seems to lose the details of a large number of them ! I really liked my Laguna up until yesterday, when at three years old with only 46,000 on the clock, the turbo blew up. It's in the garage now, so I'm waiting to see what other damage has been done. Obviously there has been a really bad design fault in these engines, and owners are paying for it. I'm wondering if this is something trading standards should be looking at? With the numbers of these which are blowing, surely these cars could be classed as "not of merchantable quality". In the service booklet it says that the 18K service intervals are only recommended. It says that if the vehicle is subjected to Door to Door driving, Low temperatures, etc etc then intervals should be reduced.. As we all know long intervals are fatal to Diesel engines, especially the 1.9DCI from Renault.. I would recommend that the oil is replaced at 6 months or 6K miles.. MAX! Oil is the "blood" of you engine. Don't let it get thick and black.. There is wear in the shaft so it should not be slapped back together or a failure will take place pre end of warranty. Old oil will be replaced with 100% synthetic - as usual. I wonder how long the turbo would have lasted with semi-syn.? As it is the car is nigh on 37,000 miles - 36,000 mile service is under way. Next oil change will be around 45,000 miles. Good open roads, steady 60 - 70 mph. 3 or 4 times a year I tow a moderately sized trailer for about 50 - 60 miles. I live 3 miles out of town, so there are virtually no stop-start journeys. It's about as "normal" as it's possible to get! So I followed Renaults recommendation - I'm the end user - that's what I'm suppossed to do. Quite clearly, Renault gave bad advice - 18,000 is just too high an interval under any conditions! Since they gave wrong advice, which I followed, and as a result my car is damaged, they ought to contribute to the cost of repair - whether it's under warranty or not! New turbo is being fitted AND intercooler. Apparently it was in the early stages of pregnancy! I have enquired after the EGR valve but not yet had a reply back. Now this is all at just under 37,000 miles. Fortunately I was able to identify the "happy whistle while you work" sound of the Garrett turbo informing you of its pending demise. I know that others would not be so lucky. 100% synthetic will be used and the next oil change will take place at 43,000 miles. It will be too big a bullet to bite at the end of three years; as it stands at fractionally under two years old, the car is worth little over 40% of the original price. This is one car that will have to be run into the ground which should not be too difficult. Don't worry about the oil and filter and all the pipes. I had them down on the list!!! However we are battling re. the EGR valve. I know it's faulty! By the way we never had our debate re. exhaust gas ****ysis and a worn turbo! Both Toyota (on petrol turbos - the GT4) and MB (turbo diesels) suggest that this test be carried out as part of the checking procedure. Insisted that they replaced oil with fully synthetic, and not the cheaper semi-synthetic they were going to use. Seems to be running fine now. Also cleared up a symptom no-one seems to have mentioned in relation to faulty turbos - at low revs, there was what can only be described as a "tinkling" noise from the exhaust. (Sounded like a piece of metal rattling around loose inside it - impossible I know, but that was what it sounded like!) Mine exhaust does that! Only at certain engine speeds, loudest at just around 1,000 revs. I thought it was a loose bracket or something so I've been ignoring it for ages! However at the time I had use a lot of taxis for obvious reasons, and one taxi driver told me the R reg passat TD I was sat in had done about 300,000 (although he quite happlily told me he'd clocked it back to 125,000) miles and he had just changed the turbo and intercooler himself for a cost of about �350 thats's some difference in both expected mileage and cost. The part alone for the turbo from Rent a no was �700 Renault's expected mileage for a turbo is 100,000 miles. The renault cust services muppet told me that when i questioned his parentage and ability to reproduce, and his apparent oedipus complex. Hence it had failed early at 84,000 so Renault offered the 25% (only after mucho pleading from my dealer btw) 100,000 miles was less than 3 years of motoring for me. They are quoting �15 for semi-synthetic or �20 for synthetic. However, I am not allowed to supply my own filter - will theirs be ok and will this have any warranty implications by not using a Renault filter? The warranty will be voided if it can be shown that a non-Renault filter caused an oil feed problem - absolutely critical on some dCi engines. You obviously did not read the topic at the top of the forum! Meanwhile I would be concerned about the 100% synthetic oil that National was using. You could be digging an even earlier grave for your engine. Buy the OEM metal filter and something like new Shell Helix Ultra 100% synthetic. 12,000 miles should be OK. Toot Toot Toady! The warranty expires at the end of the month. This morning the fuel injection warning popped up again!!! Here we go again. I have to take the car in on Friday anyway for a new window regulator (the second one in a month), so i'll get them to check it out the I suppose. It has done about 15000 miles since the replacement. Is yours a 1.9 or 2.2dCi? 2.2 I guess. Mileage now? First registered? Did your car not have the turbo oil pipe come adrift after a "new" turbo was fitted? I would write to the dealer (AaghV!), and copy RCS, asking if a new turbo or rebuilt one was fitted. It should show on your service sheet do***ent. If it was a rebuilt one you might be interested to know that Renault has ceased supplying exchange units due to reliability problems (high failure rate within 12 months!). If you were never given any warranty work do***ent kick up merry hell. Let me know how you get on. I have know idea what is wrong with National's oil - in fact National don't do an oil. However you can bet your bottom dollar it's got to be something cheap at that price and the engine in your car needs the best oil you can lay your hands. If you take your car in for its 18,000 mile service at a Renault dealer and the fact that some cheap non-OEM filter has been noted, when the increased chances of the turbo/engine blowing happens it will be: "Sorry Mister Customer your bill is �2,500 as the warranty was voided."! Quite frankly you are better off leaving the existing semi-synthetic Elf in the engine and then getting the dealer to fill the car with 100% synthetic at 18,000 miles. It's a 1.9dCi , with 43000miles on clock, reg July 02. We received the usual excuse for the lack of paperwork, internal onlywarranty work so it goes straight to Renault UK. We are now using a different RV dealer (no choice), but we do receive a record of work carried out. Since we got it, new dashboard (clock reverted to kilometers), turbo (possibly 2), new gearbox, 2 window regulators, new ECU (I only took it in with a faulty wiper), faulty tyre sensors. I have composed an e-mail to Renault, can you give me their e-mail address as the one I had bounced back. On the turbo front, they say it was a circuit fault, and they've sorted it out. (I think this may be what we were told before the other one went). Hubby will have to give it a spin up the motorway tomorrow, as it only ever happens when he drives. It was an 03 Megane II 1.5DCi. Having had a new alternator at 35k, as I was on the way out of the garage, a rather big sound like a rush of air followed by a pop was heard from the engine, after which the turbo just hissed and had no impact on the engines performance at all. Yup, another 1.5DCi with a blown turbo unit. Thankfully it was still in warranty but the point is you shouldn't have to have the following before a car is 2and a half years old: Starting problem fixed tiwce due to bad connection design Replacement ECU due to complete breakdown of the car Replacement alternator Technical fix to cure water entering (flooding through actually) cabin from behind central binnacle on dash board Replacement turbo unit Renault can't build cars properly and it is now starting to look like they will drag Nissan's reputation for reliability down as well. I hope for their sake that the new Clio has received better development, but I sincerely doubt it as they are boasting about how short the car's development time has been. Having got out of my second French car, it will be my last. Have joined the Jap camp and will be staying there permanently. I only feel sorry for anyone who is stuck with their Renault and if I can ever answer anyone's questions about my problems or how they were fixed I would only be too glad to help, although Antmat knows far more than I do. Whatever, don't be complacent like I was. My car was faultless until about 30k, then it was a disaster. The same happened with a Clio I had for 3 years from new. Great until 30k, then everything started to go pair shaped. Guess you learn from experience, but if anyone reading this is considering a Renault, learn from my experience and that of others on this forum - AVOID LIKE THE PLAGUE. The best mainstream cars are built by Honda, Mazda, Toyota, Seat and Skoda. I have a 2.2DCI imported thorugh Wilsons Epsom. I bought a 2 year extended warranty through the garage underwritten by Warranty Holdings. The Turbo failed and emptied the sump and the engine basically killed itself off burning the oil. The garage tell me that Renault are paying half....Warranty holdings 40% and I am left with a bill for �1200 which the garage have so far refused to itemise for me.just telling me it is the diference left that neither organisation will pay.Has anyone else been left in this position and what did they do about it? I am left with no car and a bill to pay...this has taken 8 weeks to sort out so far? However you have obviously NOT read the topic at the top of the Forum! What is mileage and service history of this car? I am confused but that is not difficult. You say that Renault UK is paying 50% of the bill and Warranty Holdings 40%. That leaves you with 10% and this equals �1,200 ! The total bill was �12,000? When I have more information I'll have a further think about it. No sign of the fuel injection fault.(We're going to london at the weekend though, so will get the chance to give it a long run.) My logbook def says that car was registered on July 27th 2002. We bought it the following April. I e-mailed customer services and have received absolutely no reply. Tell them that you would also like to know whether your car was fitted with a new turbo last time or a refurbished one. Write to the dealer in the same vein ASAP. It has been looked at on three occasions before now, and each time they have sent the car back apparently having re-programmed the key. But each time the fault hasn't gone. When I took the car to get the window put back up a couple of weeks ago, because it was stuck open, the 'technician' couldn't move the car into the workshop, as I'm a very small lady, and he couldn't move the seat back. It moves back into position after my hubby has used the car, but none of the controls on the seat will move it backwards, only forwards. It works fine for hubby. They said it needed a new switch, but when we pointed out that it worked OK for hubby, they obviously started looking for something else, and haven't fixed it, or have made it worse. I have sent another e-mail as you suggested this morning, and also mentioned Parker's forum, and attached a copy of the original e-mail I sent the other week. Regards , wiliewolf Exactly how old is your car? At what mileage was the replacement turbo fitted? Was it a new one? Were new pipes fitted? Was the EGR valve changed or cleaned? You are told that you have to wait a month for information held under your name. Why do you let these people run rings around you? You own this information. Tell the previous dealer to send you copies. Give them seven days to do it or state that you will get a Court order - put it in writing and send a copy to RenUK. I did email Renault - it's their problem, not the dealer's, after all is said and done - and after prodding they did come back, but claimed that the displayed mpg was only 'an indication', which was about as unconvincing as they could get. If the actual figures were, say, two or three mpg different from what is displayed I would find it acceptable, but ten to twelve mpg! Come on, pull the other one Renault. That's nearly a 25% difference!! ... more Clio 1.5 DCi Dynamique 86 We ordered our Clio in November and picked it up just after the New Year, opting for the 86 over the more powerful 110 for the former's quietness and economy. It's silver and we also opted for cruise control and climate control. Also we had a towbar fitted for my small trailer. The car feels very solid, as it should when weighing in at 1400 kg, and the doors sound nice and clumpy. The seats are comfortable and supportive, and the cabin generally seems solid and functional. The controls are placed well, unobtrusive generally and work effectively. The car is impressively quiet, road surface noise rarely intruding . On the road the car gives a good sense of being glued to the ground - although I have slid it on wet snow - and the brakes are excellent, being progressive and very powerful, which contributes to confidence. The ABS has not convinced me yet, it is poorer than the Honda Civic we had previously but it is better than simple manual braking. As a vehicle the Clio is acceptably quick and smooth, with the typical turbo-diesel mid-range grunt which is so useful for pulling past slower traffic. This doesn't alter much even when the car is loaded, probably because one is pulling a fair weight to begin with. The car has the typical diesel effortlessness; there is no sense of having to 'row the thing along', which one can get with some small cars. The electric steering is very light but rather dead, but I would prefer it that way around with my arthritic wrists, rather than heavier and with more feel. The turning circle is significantly tighter than my '03 Civic, which is useful, and the car is measurably easier to park, the rear view being better and this is further helped by the smaller dimensions. Manouvering my small trailer is also much easier, the geometry of the rear window and the hitch angle making it possible to reverse, a trick which was nigh on impossible with the Honda. Backing a long-wheelbase trailer/caravan should be no problem. The suspension is supple without being in any sense loose, wobbly or 'floaty', and seems to deal well with most road surfaces. The short wheelbase inevitably shows up in extreme situations, but as I am not in the habit of off-roading this doesn't usually bother me. The boot space a tad limited, understandable in a small car, but they have done a good job on the options for putting the seats down, and one can get an almost flat boot+rear-seat area. The spare is in the boot well, and full-sized, a distinct improvement on the Civic which had one of these 'get-you-home' jobs. The rear seat-belt sockets are in little holders which prevent them disappearing down the crack between the two seat halves, which can be an absolute pain in other cars. Generally the inside is well thought through, although there are only three cupholders - two for those in the front, and one between the front seats reachable from the rear, and there are no holders for things like small change or driving spectacles. ISO child seat brackets are fitted and are easy to use. The sunshades can be pulled out and swung to the sides, but the holding clip is quite stiff. The headlights are powerful, and have separate bulbs for dip and full beam, the dip remaining on when full beam is used. I find this useful, having enjoyed it on my Citroen ZX, and being disappointed that the Civic reverted to the single-bulb filament-swap system. There are lateral auxiliary lights which come on when turning corners, which I at first thought a little gimmicky but actually prove rather useful when turning in very dark places. The gearbox is reasonably light to use, although not quick, but I did manage to jam the lever once, curiously. I am puzzled as to how it happened, and it took some fiddling before it released. It has only happened once. The engine's grunt has been more manifest as it has run in, and despite the considerable weight the Clio's performance in a straight line is respectable - without it quite being in the Bugatti Veyron class - but then I didn't spend that sort of money. I did, however, invest in cruise control (CC), our lives seeming being dominated by the need to frequently travel a minimum of 200 miles, and often considerably more, to see our family. Apart from a slight tendency for the system to 'hunt' when the engine is not properly warm, this has been a revelation. When first investigating CC I was told a lot of rubbish by people - car salesmen in particular - who should unquestionably have known better. I was told that it was going to be made illegal, and that it was going to be taxed, that it was dangerous, etc., etc. In fact it has been more-or-less standard on luxury cars for many years, and is increasingly appearing on smaller cars; there are no plans that I am aware of to specially target it from a tax point of view; but yes, in some respects, it is potentially dangerous. So, let it be said, is driving on an empty motorway at 70 mph, or even 40. Hitting something really immoveable at that speed - a bridge pier for example - will kill you as effectively as falling out of a 'plane at 1000 ft, seatbelts and airbags not withstanding. The human body was never designed to stop dead from speeds of 60+ feet per second, and no car is 100% reliable. So we have to be just a bit balanced here. CC works by the driver setting the current speed into a memory with a button push, and then, when the foot is taken off the accelerator, the engine management system (EMS) takes over and keeps the car at the memorised speed. In the Clio one can use the accelerator to increase the car speed (to pass a truck, for instance), and when one lifts off the EMS regains control and resumes at the previously set speed. The slightest touch on the brake, or declutching to change gear, or a press of the 'Off' button, will disconnect the CC and return absolute control to the driver. It works, and works well. The Clio's CC, like nearly all modern ones, is incremental, allowing one to adjust the speed up or down by approximately 1mph for each button-press. This is a refinement which is very useful when in a column of traffic and someone ahead is moving marginally slower (or faster) than yourself. However, without a shadow of doubt CC slows one's reactions. The reason is simple. With one's foot on the carpet it takes measurably longer in an emergency to lift the foot and stamp on the brake than to transfer it sideways from the adjoining accelerator pedal. CC should never be used if there are a lot of cars closely around one, or on country or urban roads - anywhere, in fact, where you need, or are very likely to need, full control. Using CC also has some wrinkles. I was intruiged by, for example, just how far away from a roundabout one had to cancel the CC to slow down smoothly. It was considerably further than I had at first anticipated. It is also not necessarily the best way to keep a good mpg. The tendency under manual control is to slow down marginally on an upgrade and accelerate on a downgrade. CC simply feeds the power in as one goes up the hill and backs off as one goes down. At least the CC stops any tendency to see-saw on the loud pedal, which is seriously inimical to good fuel economy. But the real advantage of CC, and for which we bought it, is that it allows the driver to be much more relaxed in appropriate situations. Both my wife and I have back problems, and sitting for two hours in one position, necessitated by keeping one's right foot in one place, plays real hookey with sciatica. CC eliminates that almost totally. I wouldn't advocate actually putting one's feet up on the dash, but the freedom of movement allowed is wonderful. It has converted long journeys from being wearisome to being quite pleasurable. To take real advantage of the CC we have tended to travel in the late evening - and to avoid the M25. CC is not best used in a car park. All that said, I have to confess that the engine itself is something of a disappointment so far. At first, when cold and to a lesser extent when warmed up, there is an annoying crackle to it, which fortunately is all but inaudible at engine speeds over about 2000 rpm. That has improved somewhat as the engine has run in, although it is still just present most of the time, and as colder weather sets in again is becoming more noticeable. It isn't a rattle, just a harshness. That said, in almost all other respects it is without fault so far - except for one other rather crucial point. One of the reasons we bought the Clio, although it has to be said not the most important, was for its economy. The advertised 64 mpg was quite mouth-watering. After the first 1500 miles, during which the dealer warned that things wouldn't be quite what we expected, the displayed mpg has been between 60 and 68. So far so good. Travelling from Barnstaple to Tiverton, in March 2008, behind a line of trucks trundling along at about 45 the Clio recorded 74 mpg, which, as anyone who knows that road will witness is no small feat due to some stiff hills. That did impress me, although in all fairness I really was employing a feather-foot. We then continued up to the Lake District, and although the average fell at 70 mph on the motorway it seemed to be able to keep up a pretty good mpg, and we returned home with it showing well over 60. But then I did an independent calculation on the mpg from miles covered and litres actually put in, and was shocked to find that for all miles done, about 4000 to that point, the combined mpg came out around 52, and that did not take into account the small amount of fuel which the dealer put in to enable me to drive the car away. Something is drastically wrong here. I am disappointed with the fuel consumption, no question, but the real issue is the dishonesty. How can the EMS calculate such an mpg, one which is palpably incorrect? As far as I can tell the speedo is pretty accurate, which implies that the distance measurement system is also, but that leaves the fuel metering and the calculation system as possibly guilty. But EMS's these days have to meter fuel to the picolitre, so why can it not tell me the truth? I did email Renault - it's their problem, not the dealer's, after all is said and done - and after prodding they did come back, but claimed that the displayed mpg was only 'an indication', which was about as unconvincing as they could get. The only ameliorating factor, at least so far as the actual mpg is concerned, is that Renault do not consider the engine completely run in until it has covered 8000 miles, but frankly at the present rate of improvement of the mpg the car won't get anywhere near 64. In order to nail this down properly I decided to fill the tank, clear the trip which controls the displayed mpg, and then run it for 300 miles or so. This I have now done and the results make for interesting reading. Actual mileage was 346, true litres used were 28.3, making the true mpg 55.6. Claimed gallons used were 5.3, which converts to 24.1 litres, and the displayed mpg was 64.0. This is a 15% difference in the mpg. It is just possible that the fill-up at each end wasn't equivalent, but it isn't really tenable to use this as an explanation of a 4 litre disparity. Whatever, it is the fuel used which seems to be the problem, and one wonders just how this measurement is achieved and whether it is possible to re-calibrate a sensor to make this more representative. In all fairness I ought also to say that on the previous fill-up I recorded a true mpg of 58+, and we are not out of the running-in period yet. Nevertheless there is still the issue of the discrepancy between what I know the car is doing and what it tells me. A disparity of 2-3 mpg might be acceptable. Frankly 8+ mpg really isn't. I suppose I am a little irritated that with normal use the car is apparently achieving its advertised mpg when as a matter of strict fact it is doing nothing of the kind. I wonder just how many other Clio buyers are being conned into thinking that their car is doing 64mpg? That all sounds as if it is a serious issue. In one sense it is of course - I object very strongly to being conned, and conned I have been over what the car is actually doing. In almost all other respects, however, the car has more than lived up to its promise. It's a solid, brisk, quiet and relatively frugal bit of kit, with just enough internal space to be seriously useful, and small enough and with the manoeuvrability to park almost anywhere. It also attracts no congestion charge - yet - and has a nominal road tax. The CC is a life saver for us. The styling isn't quite my cup of tea, admittedly, and I thought that the Civic was significantly more elegant, but so what? I'm inside, and frankly I don't give a hoot about what it looks like outside, so long as it works. Does it work? Yes. We recently had a need to hire a car, and we ended up with the new Renault Clio 1.5 DCi. We didn’t ask for a diesel in particular, we were just allocated one. However in the past, I have owned a Rover metro diesel and an Audi A3 1.9 turbodiesel, and in particular I miss the economy, as I normally drive a lot of miles each year. We had never driven a Clio before, although we do own a 1997 Renault Laguna, and ... ...driver, and front passenger airbags, Renault anti Intruder device and an immobiliser. If you pay attention to car advertising and motoring magazines, you will doubtless know that the Renault Laguna was awarded five Stars in the Euro-NCAP tests, the only car to have achieved this. The car from the outside still look new and the same is on the inside but the owner of this car has taken a lot of care and effort to keep it in tiptop condition. You have a wide choice of the type of engines that you can have and you can decide ... ...Interior This has been improved a lot, it feels like you are getting a lot more room in the car than another models, there is a big boot for all the shopping, the back seats have lots of room but can get cramp if the front passengers are bigger than 6 foot. The seats are comfy but the car I was in didn't have back headrests and I found this strange. Anyway this has just been cleared up now so hopefully it won't reoccur. Whilst this has taken some of the shine of owning the car, i am still enjoying it. It has done just over 4k in the time i have had it since new and all of them have been happy miles if a little overheated in the few days ... ...fix but no one at Renault seemed bothered in the slightest. Passengers are very surprised it is a diesel, and also how comfortable it is on long journeys for a small car. Boot space is great for weekends away and a booze cruise to europe is certainly not out of the question. The TCe 100 which already features in the Renault Twingo, Clio and Modus line-ups is joined by the new TCe 130 (available for New Renault Mégane from next spring) and the TCe 180. The new range of Euro 5-compliant dCi diesel engines offers the market's best trade-off between performance and fuel consumption. Like the dCi 90, the dCi 110 and the new dCi 130, all these engines combine fuel efficiency, response and performance without affecting their acclaimed, lowest-in-class noise levels. The V6 dCi 235 diesel engine, which has been developed for the brand's upper-range models – notably Laguna Coupe – delivers outstanding performance and supreme driving enjoyment. Thanks to the dCi and TCe line-up, almost 70% of the New Mégane engine range qualifies for the Renault eco² signature, which is a clear indication of their sound ecological and economical credentials. In order to reduce polluting emissions further in readiness for upcoming European legislation, Renault's engineers are working on other ways of cutting emissions at source thanks to the optimisation of the combustion process and to the introduction of post-treatment systems such as the nitrogen oxide-capturing NOx Trap which will equip the dCi 175 engine. A further new feature of the powertrain line-up on display is the Renault-Nissan Alliance-developed continuously variable transmission (CVT) which eliminates gearshifts to ensure smooth, sprightly performance and even greater driving comfort. It will be available for the New Mégane range from 2009. The TCe range The advent of New Mégane has seen the development of a range of petrol TCe engines which all benefit from the expertise of Renault's engineers in the realm of turbocharging. Known as TCe (Turbo Control efficiency), these feisty turbocharged petrol engines ensure lively, responsive acceleration from very low revs and smooth delivery of power all the way up the rev range. They are economical, too, with running and servicing costs among the best on the market. The TCe line-up comprises three engines: the TCe 100, the TCe 130 and the TCe 180. TCe 100 The beginning of 2007 saw Renault release the TCe 100 petrol engine which is aimed at its A- and B-segment vehicles (Twingo GT, Clio and Modus). In addition to being a pleasure to drive, this 1,149cc unit returns the fuel consumption expected of an engine of its size, yet features the power of a 1.4 and the torque of a 1.6. It is equipped with a low inertia turbo and was developed with a view to becoming a benchmark in its class in terms of performance and fuel efficiency. Indeed, its fuel consumption of just 48.7 mpg under the bonnet of Clio III (equivalent to CO2 emissions of 138g/km) makes it particularly frugal and environmentally friendly. The TCe 100 has also been developed in anticipation of the expected upturn in demand for petrol engines following the switch to the Euro 5 legislation. It is mated to a five-speed manual gearbox (JH3) and is manufactured in Douvrin, France . TCe 130 Renault's latest petrol engine is the TCe 130 (H4Jt) which stands out as a perfect illustration of the expertise the brand has acquired in the realm of downsizing. Although it packs power of a 1.8-litre engine (130hp) and the torque of a 2.0 (190Nm), this new 1,397cc powerplant is particularly fuel efficient and respectful of the environment. Developed within the framework of the Renault-Nissan Alliance, the TCe 130 benefited from the synergy made possible by the respective expertise of the two manufacturers, namely Nissan's experience of petrol engine development and Renault's know-how on the combustion and turbocharging fronts. Derived from Nissan's normally-aspirated HR15 and HR16 blocks (1.5 and 1.6 litres), this new engine is equipped with an aluminium block and a single-scroll turbo. The profile of the intake ports has been modified in comparison with the normally-aspirated version to encourage the generation of a tumble effect inside the combustion chamber. This ensures a more homogenous blend which in turn favours a more even spread of the flame for enhanced combustion performance. The technique optimises torque at low revs without impairing performance at high engine speeds. The continuously variable camshaft angle at the intake port also contributes to improving performance at all engine speeds and to curbing fuel consumption. To deal with the calories produced by the thermo-mechanical constraints associated with this extra performance and the higher pressures inside the combustion chambers, oil jets are employed to cool the pistons. The TCe 130 ranks among the best engines in its class as far as running and servicing costs are concerned. Oil change intervals and oil filter changes are every 18,000 miles (or every two years). The air filter and sparkplugs need to be changed every 36,000 miles (or every four years) and the figure for the accessory drive belt is every 90,000 miles (or every six years). This engine drives through a manual six-speed gearbox (TL4) and is manufactured in Valladolid, Spain . TCe 180 The TCe 180 is a new evolution of the 1,998cc turbocharged petrol block (F4Rt) which provides unrivalled driving pleasure. With torque of 300Nm at 2,250rpm, it is extremely responsive and provides exceptional pick-up from low revs thanks to the combination of its twin-scroll turbo and continuously variable camshaft angle at the intake port which optimises the intake of air into the combustion chamber and enables the turbine to spin up to speed more quickly. The turbo consequently responds to the slightest touch of the accelerator from revs as low as 1,200rpm. The TCe 180 is Euro 5-ready and will equip the New Mégane family. It is coupled with a six-speed manual gearbox (PK4) and is manufactured in Cléon, France . OCS (Oil Control System) for lower running costs Following its introduction on the dCi range, the Oil Control System (OCS) is now available for the TCe 100 and TCe 130 engines, too. This feature uses the engine's ECU to calculate servicing intervals as a function of the way the vehicle is used. Should running conditions be considered too severe (e.g. door-to-door type city motoring exclusively), a warning on the dashboard invites the driver to bring forward the next oil change. OCS enables Renault to recommend competitive oil change intervals, while at the same time providing a solution that protects those owners who stray from conventional use. OCS employs an algorhythm which notably takes into account the vehicle's road speed and engine speed. OCS is today fitted to the TCe 100 and is poised to be extended to all the Renault range's TCe and dCi powerplants. The dCi range Like its petrol range, Renault's Euro5 diesel blocks have been renamed and are now known as dCi 90, dCi 110, dCi 130, dCi 150 and dCi 180, plus the new V6 dCi 235. Every one of these powerplants features flexibility and a reserve of power from very low down all the way up the revs. Renault's dCi engines incorporate the best technology to achieve the market's best trade-off between performance and fuel consumption. Special care has also gone into minimising running and servicing costs thanks to extended servicing intervals. The dCi 90 and dCi 110 The 85 and 105hp versions of the 1.5 dCi, which have both been acclaimed for the excellent fuel consumption and equally outstanding driving pleasure they provide, have been joined by two new versions: the dCi 90 and the dCi 110 (depending on market). Under the bonnet of New Mégane, they deliver even better performance, with CO2 emissions of less than 120g/km. Widely praised for their efficiency and acoustic performance, these 1,461cc powerplants boast torque of 200 and 240Nm respectively and are particularly responsive at low revs. This evolution of the 1.5 dCi features a new fuel return rail and a new control unit for improved fuel efficiency, while the injection pressure has been increased to 1,650 bar and faster sparkplug performance has speeded up starting from cold. To comply with the forthcoming Euro 5 legislation, and in keeping with Renault's stand on the environment, these two engines are equipped with a particulate filter which uses an additional injector located in the exhaust line. This technology is covered by some 30 patents and functions without the driver noticing. The running and servicing costs associated with the dCi 90 and dCi 110 engines are among the lowest of their class. Oil change intervals have been extended from 12,000 miles to 18,000 miles (or every two years) and the life expectancy of the diesel filter has increased from 24,000 miles to 36,000 miles. The timing belt needs changing every 90,000 miles and no longer every 72,000 miles. These engines are planned to be B30 biodiesel-compatible in certain countries and will gradually be introduced on Renault models. They are coupled with either a five-speed (JH3) or six-speed (TL4) manual gearbox depending on power output. This Euro 5-compliant diesel block is manufactured in Valladolid, Spain . The dCi 130 To prepare for the switch to the Euro 5 standard, the dCi 130 engine (F9Q) has been significantly reworked. As a result, this 1,870cc block offers unrivalled driving pleasure. Its peak power of 130hp is available from as low down as 3,750rpm (instead of 4,000rpm previously) and maximum torque (300Nm) is available from 1,750rpm (instead of 2,000rpm). These figures have been made possible thanks to the revised variable geometry turbo with curved blades which contribute to swifter response and the speedier availability of power. The seven-hole injector nozzles (compared with six previously) ensure a finer, and consequently more economical fuel spray. Last but not least, the catalytic particulate filter (regeneration by combustion) and the addition of a new EGR (exhaust gas recirculation) cooler enable it to comply with the forthcoming Euro 5 standard. These features combine to improve dynamic and acoustic performance, and also optimised fuel consumption, with New Mégane dCi 130 emitting just 135g of CO2/km for a power output of 130hp. Oil change intervals are now every 18,000 miles (instead of 9,000 miles) and the timing belt needs changing every 90,000 miles (instead of 72,000 miles). This diesel engine drives through a new six-speed manual gearbox (ND4) and is manufactured in Cléon, France . The dCi 150 and dCi 180 This 1,995cc engine (M9R) is the fruit of a Renault-led Renault-Nissan joint-development and is available with several power outputs, notably the dCi 150 and dCi 180 versions. In addition to combining performance, low noise and respect for the environment, the two versions of this engine are among the most efficient of their class and produce exceptional power outputs of 150hp at 4,000rpm and 180hp at 3,750rpm respectively. Their maximum torque is 340Nm and 400Nm at 2,000rpm respectively and this torque is readily available all the way up the revs to 5,000rpm. Its low inertia variable geometry turbo produces gains in dynamic performance at low revs which is where it really comes into its own. Meanwhile, thanks to their ultra-fast pre-heat sparkplugs, it only takes a press on the 'Start' button to fire up the dCi 150 and dCi 180 engines immediately, even in very cold weather (-23°C). The dCi 180 is equipped with a particulate filter and a new EGR cooler, and has been engineered for sheer driving enjoyment. In Laguna GT, it returns combined cycle fuel consumption of 43.4 mpg (equivalent to CO2 emissions of 172g/km). This diesel engine can be mated either to a six-speed manual gearbox (PK4) or to the six-speed auto-adaptive logic automatic transmission (AJ0). It is manufactured in Cléon, France . The V6 dCi 235 With a power output of 235hp, a generous rev range all the way up to 5,200rpm and peak torque of 450Nm at 1,500rpm, the 2,993cc V6 dCi 235 (V9X) places the emphasis very much on performance. Powered by this engine, Renault Laguna Coupe accelerates from standstill to 62 mph in less than seven seconds. Derived from the dCi 150/dCi 180 block, with which it shares some 25% of its components, it has been developed to stand out as a benchmark in terms of low noise. It employs high pressure common rail injection with two common rails calibrated at 1,800 bar which feed seven-hole piezoelectric injectors. This technology permits up to five injections per cycle for a higher combustion quality and optimised acoustic performance. The Renault V6 dCi 235 engine is equipped with a variable geometry turbocharger, a system which yields high torque from very low revs and flexibility at all engine speeds. The architecture of the exhaust manifolds has been specially engineered to limit load losses and ensure that as much energy as possible is delivered to the turbine. Ultra-fast ceramic technology sparkplugs permit near-instantaneous preheating and starting from cold. Specific work into the calibration of the control unit and the electronic throttle ensure instant engine response. With this engine under the bonnet, Renault Laguna Coupe emits just 192g of CO2/km. For enhanced reliability and quality, this engine is equipped with two timing chains. Servicing intervals are every 18,000 miles (or every two years). The V6 dCi 235 drivers through the six-speed auto-adaptive automatic transmission (AJ0) and is manufactured in Cléon, France . NOx Trap: Renault's nitrogen oxide trap Renault's NOx Trap, a chemical system which traps harmful nitrogen oxides and converts them into a neutral gas, fits perfectly with the firm's resolve to cut polluting emissions. This post-treatment technology has led to 36 patents being filed by Renault and has been running in France and Germany since last month on small company Renault Espace dCi 175 fleets. The new Renault NOx Trap oxidation catalyser carries out two roles: conventional oxidation of HCs (hydrocarbons) resulting from incomplete combustion and of CO (carbon monoxide) which arises from incomplete combustion through a lack of oxygen. post-treatment of NOx (nitrogen oxides), a bi-product of the combustion of diesel fuel at high temperatures. How the Renault NOx Trap functions The NOx Trap is based on two alternating phases: the charging phase, which lasts around 10 minutes every 10km, and the purge phase which lasts approximately five seconds. The driver is totally unaware of the process. During the charge phase, the NOx Trap captures the nitrogen oxides contained in the exhaust gases by means of a porous carrier in the catalytic converter impregnated with platinum, barium, and rhodium. The platinum converts the nitrogen monoxide into nitrogen dioxide (NO2). The barium oxide then captures the nitrogen dioxide molecules to form barium nitrate (NO3)2 which is stored in the trap. During the purge or regeneration phase, the elements stored in the NOx Trap are eliminated by chemical reduction with the engine running in rich burn mode, that is to say with an air-fuel mixture incorporating just enough air for complete combustion of the diesel fuel. The nitrogen oxides are converted into a neutral gas (chiefly nitrogen). The regenerated NOx Trap is consequently able to pursue its role of trapping more nitrogen oxide. To ensure the process runs smoothly, additional sensors (oxygen and temperature probes) are positioned in the engine intake and exhaust. The data they collect is transmitted via the CAN to the ECU which controls the NOx Trap. CVT transmission: for a more comfortable drive The innovative CVT Continuously Variable Transmission (FK0) was developed by Nissan and is employed by Renault within the framework of the Alliance. In the case of a conventional automatic transmission, the ability to adapt the point on the engine's operating curve (engine speed and throttle) to the demand for power is restricted by the number of gears (five or six). The continuous variation of the CVT allows the point on the engine's operating curve to be optimized from the fuel consumption, emissions and also acoustic points of view, even during transitory phases. Fuel economy is improved compared with a conventional automatic transmission. The system delivers an exceptionally smooth and comfortable drive thanks to the seamless acceleration during gearshifts. Indeed, thanks to specific work by Alliance engineers, the CVT proposed by Renault figures among the best of its category in terms of its seamless acceleration performance. The 2.0 16V (140hp) versions of New Mégane will benefit initially from this technology. All the engines in the new TCe and dCi ranges are Euro 4-compliant and are already compatible with the forthcoming Euro 5 emissions standard.
