I have the 2005 1.2 Extreme 3dr version. Steering is very light and reliability is EXCELLENT! SO confortable and everything easy to reach. GREAT standard stereo. Remote C/L and all electric work great. Great economy and the display modes (MPG, Avg Speed, Dist Left, fuel used, etc) are a great help. Only minor problem a 5 door may have been more useful as all my mates now want to just 'go for a drive' in it. Great. Report this review Bought for £4,000 a total steal, this little gem has constantly performed on all terrains, in all weather and even with my 17 year old brother raping the engine. Still perfectly running and always reliable. The only downsize I could even consider when thinking about the Renault Clio Extreme is perhaps the clunky gear box, which as we all know is normally sorted after a good service or a bit of tuning. Acceleration is very good despite it being slightly heavier than other cars in its class such as the Peugeot 106 and the handling is great to. The brakes are very good and feel very responsive on the peddle, as is the throttle peddle. Fuel consumption is excellent which is useful as I'm only 17. Report this review I have just recently gone to view a renault clio 3 extreme 04 plate for sale, i test drove it and it was great. The car was very responsive to acceleration and deceleration, although i do not own this car as of yet i have high hopes for it, and it looks good aswell. Bad points: when you are travelling over rough ground e.g. gravel, the sun roof does rattle slightly however this does not occur on normal roads. Everything on this car went wrong after a while. there were problems after problems. i spent altogether trying to fix the car, around £2000, at the end the car just became even worse,and would go into limp home mode every 5 mins. i thought the problem was lambda sensor. i changed it and it did nothing. eventually i sent it to a friend to have a close look only to find the ECU had gone! Report this review Almost everything about this car is superb, decent acceleration and speed for a 1.2 and will keep up with most others despite being heavier, very safe for passengers, comes with a huuuge amount of mod-cons for its price i.e. climate control, electric wing mirrors, rain sensitive windscreen wipers etc. and has a beautifully layed out and designed interior (in my opinion) I find it a pleasure to drive. Report this review Problems every 2 weeks, fire damage to electric mirror switch, CD players keep breaking, misfires, backfires, cuts out, knocks and rattles, water leak from sunroof, wheel bearings and rough idling all went wrong in 1st year of ownership. Steve Ghosley ReportsIt would seem that the British public just cant get enough of Renaults Clio. For private buyers it is the best selling small car in the country. Renault are seeking to capitalise on this by offering yet another special edition, called the Extreme 4, the car were looking at here. Renault claim that the Extreme 4 offers a sporty look combined with value for money. Based on the popular Dynamique trim level, the Extreme 4 is only available in three-door form but does have a choice of six engines. Build Comfort Depreciation Economy Equipment Handling Insurance Performance Styling Value The petrol powerplants are 1.2, 1.4 and 1.6-litres in size, the two larger units having originally powered Clio variants badged Si and RSi. There is a choice of diesel engines, all based on the impressive 1.5-litre dCi producing 65bhp, 80bhp or 100bhp respectively. The largest petrol-powered engine will launch this Clio from rest to 60mph in a reasonable 9.6s whilst the highest-powered diesel does the same test in a second slower at 10. 6s. The 1.6-litre petrol delivers a top speed of 121mph whereas the 1.5-litre dCi 100bhp diesel tops out at 115mph. The Extreme 4 Special Edition trim features Alium 15-inch alloy wheels, a sports rear spoiler, front fog lamps, a leather trimmed steering wheel and sports front seats. Aluminium finish interior trim and a trip computer are all included in the standard equipment list as well as a four-speaker RDS radio cassette or optional single CD player. The Extreme 4 also has its own special interior with the upholstery featuring an exclusive blue-grey Extreme fabric. In addition, the exterior is also made up to look like the awesome Clio Renaultsport 182 with body-coloured bumper inserts in metallic paint finish. "its a car you could own as an only vehicle, thanks to its extra room inside and its more mature cruising abilities"Prices for the this Clio start at £8,795 for the 1.2-litre 16-valve which is £505 less than the equivalent Dynamique model on which it is based. Customers of the Extreme 4 Special Edition can customise their car by choosing from five options and one pack. The Chill Pack features air-conditioning and a CD player whereas the options include an RDS radio and single CD player, a manual tilt and slide glass sunroof, air-conditioning, metallic paint and pre-telephone equipment. The Renault Clio Extreme 4 Special Edition is available in six different colours and features two new hues of Mercury, a silver metallic illusion and Tempest, a dark blue-grey metallic illusion. Previous Clios havent been noted for their handling finesse, except in sporty guises, and this one is no different. Still, a wider front track enables this model to use a much more sophisticated suspension system, first featured in the Megane and the result is sharper handling that really shows in the latest models. To emphasise the point, this variant of the Clio gets stiffer suspension, new damper settings and front and rear anti-roll bars. Inside, the interior looks very cutting edge with enhanced materials and extra equipment. The panels on the rear doors have a soft-feel, while the dashboard instruments mimic the design found in the Megane for a more state-of-the-art appearance. Most salient amongst the interior features is probably the digital screen mounted on the centre console to supply up-to-the-minute information on the Clios various systems. In true Renault style, safety gets its usual top billing. The previous Clio had already achieved a top four star rating in the EuroNCAP crash tests and builds on that by further including adaptive intelligent twin front and side airbags with two levels of inflation, depending upon the seating position of the driver and the severity of the impact. For the rear side seats, pretensioners are now combined with 600kg load limiters. Finally, the latest Clio is equipped with Isofix three-point child safety seat attachments in the rear side seats and the front passenger seat, which is provided with airbag inhibition, should you wish your child to be placed alongside the driver. Otherwise, the recipe is much as youd find across the rest of the latest Clio line-up. In other words, its a car you could own as an only vehicle, thanks to its extra room inside and its more mature cruising abilities. Inside, the large glass area gives the cabin a light, airy feel. Outside too, theres an impression of extra width, courtesy of the curvy front wings, large headlamps and that unique upright tailgate with its domed glass. Rivals? Well, you could consider Peugeots 206 XSi, Fiats Punto Sporting or Citroens C2 VTR. All are around the same price, although when comparing like with like with regard to specification, the differential changes substantially. If Renault has made shortcuts in order to create this advantage, then they're not immediately obvious. The only ones weve found are a non-lockable glovebox - which could be annoying if you habitually leave the car around town in view of the light-fingered. On the contrary in fact, there are a lot of nice touches you might not expect on a car of this class. Take the useful eye-level display showing radio and clock information. Or the bendy composite front wings, designed to withstand supermarket scrapes - you can stamp on them and they still pop back into shape without a scratch. This is one of the reasons why the eight-year paintwork warranty is the longest in the class. In addition, with the Extreme 4 Special Edition, Renault are offering one years free insurance if the car is purchased using Renault Selections. Renault would seem to be on a roll with the Clio. They have a product that the British seem to love and with each new special edition the value for money proposition gets even better. Its The Tricky Job Of The Extreme Trim Level To Change All That, As Steve Walker ReportsAesthetically speaking, which is the most attractive of the UK markets medium range family cars? By medium range we mean Mondeos, Vectras and their ilk so although selecting the prettiest vehicle in any sector is very much a matter of personal taste, its a safe bet that the Renault Laguna will feature high in the reckoning. Safety too is an area where the Laguna excels. It was the first vehicle to gain a 5-star rating from Euro NCAP and its positively brimming with features designed to protect its own occupants as well as other road users. On style and safety, the Laguna is always going to be at or near the top of the pile but buyers after a sporty image and dynamic ability may have felt inclined to look elsewhere. All right, so the Renault cant match the sharp, sporty feel thats common to all Mondeo models and it palpably isnt the most inspiring vehicle to drive but this car is no slowcoach. With a surefooted chassis and a range including some powerful engines, the Laguna is at least on a par with most of the direct competition. Despite this, it remains easier for Renaults marketing men to tell us about their cars impressive looks, class-leading safety and high equipment levels than for them to go in heavy on dynamic attributes that are not such a strong suit for the car. The result is that the Lagunas sporting pretensions have been largely overshadowed in the eyes of buyers. The Extreme designation, Renault hope, will go some way towards redressing the balance."The Laguna didnt get a 5-star NCAP rating by accident"Keeping track of Renault trim levels can be a thankless task: Expression, Dynamique, Privilege, Initiale and GT205 - the Laguna is offered in all of them and Extreme slots in below Dynamique in the Sport Collection section of the range to complicate things further. Theres nothing particularly extreme about its position in the lower echelons of the line-up but the Laguna Extreme attempts to live up to its name in other ways. Alloy wheels and spoilers are staples of sporty derivatives in model ranges everywhere and the Laguna Extreme is no exception. It gets 17" Impulsion alloys and either a rear spoiler on the hatchback or a set of alloy-effect roof bars if you go for the Sport Tourer. Part-leather sports seats in the front bring the better bolstering youll need during more spirited cornering manoeuvres and the drivers seat gains lumbar support while the passengers gets a height adjustment facility. Then theres the three-spoke leather-covered sports steering wheel and a Category 1 alarm in case the Laguna Extremes sporty looks attract unwanted attention from the criminal fraternity. Extreme trim itself comes well stocked with air-conditioning, electric heated door mirrors and a CD-player plus all the other standard kit. Of the engines available in the wider Laguna range, just three are offered with the Laguna Extreme. The absence of the 210bhp V6 unit and the 2.0-litre turbo means that things are never going to get really rapid but a 135bhp 2.0-litre 16-valve engine is offered. This engine is respectably quick - it takes less than 10 seconds to reach 60mph and can reach a 129mph top speed. The diesels are better; the 120bhp 1.9dCi performs the 60mph sprint in a more sedate time to the 2.0-litre petrol but gives much improved in-gear performance. Torque on this engine has also been increased from 270Nm to a nice round 300Nm. Finally, theres the 130bhp dCi 130 which is quicker still, Euro IV compliant and probably the pick of the range. Without the 2.0-litre Turbo engine the Laguna Extreme cant lay claim to anything approaching performance car prowess but the dCi engines represent a sensible balance between speed and economy. The £16,425 asking price for the Extreme hatchback with the 2.0-litre petrol engine seems reasonable enough. If you want 1.9-litre dCi 120 power, youll pay £800 in addition to this and the dCi 130 engine is a further £300 on top of that. In all cases, the equivalent Sports Tourer estate models are £1,100 more expensive and if you want to push the boat out further, there are options packs available to spec-up your Laguna Extreme. Choose from the packs entitled Comfort, Relax, Technology and Safety. Youll get a variety of extras and pay a price thats less than the sum of each collections constituent parts. The Laguna didnt get a 5-star NCAP rating by accident, unless you count the numerous times it was driven into walls and T-boned by battering rams during the testing process, Renault have put huge amounts of time and money into making all their cars as safe as houses. So it is that the Lagunas core specification is awash with airbags and other safety systems. Some of the highlights include ABS with EBV brake proportioning valve and emergency brake assist, three-point safety belts throughout and doors that lock automatically as the car pulls away. The car is also exceedingly strongly constructed to ensure that the passenger compartment remains intact in the event of a collision. Unfortunately for Renault, a set of alloy wheels, a spoiler and a leather-wrapped steering wheel does not a sporty car make. The Laguna isnt the best drivers car in its class and no amount of cosmetic tinkering is going to change that. On the other hand, though, a lack of any real sporting character has never stopped other manufacturers from sticking on a spoiler or two and trying to endow their family saloons with a little performance pedigree.
