Jonathan Crouch ReportsRenault was one of the first car makers to realise that theres a profitable market niche for well-equipped small cars. The 5 Monaco brought unprecedented levels of luxury into this category over a decade ago and the tradition was handed on to the Clio Baccara and Initiale. This latest restyled Initiale is the most luxurious small Renault ever.This is part of the Elegance Collection in a range of revised Clios and can be ordered in five-door form with a 110bhp 16-valve 1.6-litre petrol engine for £13,500 or in automatic form for an additional £1,000. Diesel buyers can now opt for a dCi100 version for £14,600. The Clio Initiale appears especially suitable for the type of buyer whos had a company car for most of their working life. Build Comfort Depreciation Economy Equipment Handling Insurance Performance Styling Value On retirement, the executive express with all the trimmings goes back and the search begins for a smaller but no less luxurious car to get to golf, the shops and the holiday cottage in Provence. The Initiale has what Renault claims to be the most comprehensive standard equipment of any small car on the market. The list originally included leather/alcantara upholstery, air conditioning, wood trim, alloy wheels, anti-lock brakes, four airbags, a CD player, power windows and mirrors, illuminated vanity mirrors, remote central locking, a leather-covered steering wheel, metallic paint and a garment carrier under the rear parcel shelf. In its latest guise however, this model has also gained quite a bit extra big car features that Renault hopes will enable it to steal sales from family hatchbacks in the next class up. Additions include automatic climate-controlled air conditioning, cruise control with a speed limiter to stop you losing your licence in built-up areas, xenon headlamps with auto height adjustment and power wash, automatic rain-sensitive wipers and automatic headlamps that switch on by themselves in poor conditions. A satellite navigation system is now optional."If you want to downsize without giving up on luxuries, the Clio Initiale may be well worth a look"The manual Initiale 1.6-litre is no slouch. Sharing its 16-valve 1.6-litre engine with the sporty three-door Dynamique model, it sprints to 60mph in 9. 6 seconds on the way to 122mph Thats a fair bit faster than the automatic version which uses Proactive technology first seen in larger luxury cars, the transmission matching gear changes to driving style. That means it changes up sooner if youre driving leisurely yet holds on to gears longer when you want to press on. It can also sense when youre descending a steep hill and will downshift to provide engine braking to help slow you down. You may not instantly recognise the styling revisions on the latest Clio when its positioned alongside its predecessor but, take our word for it, they are there. The changes at the front amount to what Renault insist is a bolder, more sporty front bumper that incorporates revised fog-lamp housings on those models deemed posh enough to be equipped with fog lamps. The Initiale model is one of these chosen few. Inside, the interior has been similarly warmed over with enhanced materials and extra equipment. The panels on the rear doors are now soft-feel, while the dashboard instruments now mimic the design found in the Megane for a more cutting-edge appearance. Most salient amongst the interior additions is probably the digital screen now mounted on the centre console to supply up-to-the-minute information on the Clios various systems. In true Renault style, safety gets its usual top billing. The previous Clio had already achieved a top four star rating in the EuroNCAP crash tests and builds on that by further including adaptive intelligent twin front and side airbags with two levels of inflation, depending upon the seating position of the driver and the severity of the impact. For the rear side seats, pretensioners are now combined with 600kg load limiters. Finally, the latest Clio is equipped with Isofix three-point child safety seat attachments in the rear side seats and the front passenger seat, which is provided with airbag inhibition, should you wish your child to be placed alongside the driver. The Initiale may be loaded with luxury equipment but its obvious that a lot of thought has gone into tackling real world issues. Take the bendy composite front wings, designed to withstand supermarket scrapes (you can stamp on them and they still pop back into shape without a scratch). Then there's the lengthy service interval (two years or 12,000 miles). This is one of the reasons why the eight-year paintwork warranty is the longest in the class. But the Clio hasnt just grown up on paper, it is more mature out on the road. A wider front track enables the car to use a much more sophisticated suspension system, first featured in the Megane. The result is a huge improvement in ride, though the springing - like the seats - is still soft enough for it to be obvious that you're in a French car. As far as handling is concerned, the Clio isnt quite as sharp as some of its supermini rivals. Still, its arguably the best small car you can buy for long distance work, as at home on motorways as it is around town. If the rear seat legroom was better, you could really tour four-up: still few superminis excel when it comes to back seat space. It's a case of carry on Clio then. This has always been one of Britain's favourite French small cars. Now, with its more individual identity and range of big car virtues, that position has been consolidated. My engine of choice is the 2.2dci 150bhp. I am not particularly a fan of diesels but needed to get a little sensible about ......choose the more economical 1.9dci given its lower power output(125 bhp I think) and lack of Initiale version. The biggest disappointment is the fuel economy which usually averages around 37mpg. With effort I can achieve 40 but compared to a rather more spirited 130bhp Passatt driving colleague of mine who never sees less than 50mpg it is not good. In addition bits fall off from time to time; speaker covers, undershields and alike. Elegance and creativity are Initiale's watchwords, elements of design having been lavished on every detail of the vehicle.Seventy years ago, the Renault 40CV stole the show at numerous coachwork competitions - from Monte Carlo to Deauville, from Enghien to Bagatelle - the Parisian park. On 9 September 1995, Renault returned to Bagatelle to unveil Initiale at the prestigious "Classic Cars and Louis Vuitton" competition as a prelude to the car making its world debut at the Frankfurt Motor Show the following week.Initiale - both echo and advanced guardThat Initiale sports a hatchback profile is an echo of every luxury Renault saloon from the innovative 16 right through to the Safrane. A glazed section runs the length of the vehicle - from front screen, over the roof to the V-shaped rear window. But unlike other hatch designs, Initiale's passenger space is not disturbed when the boot is opened. Renault has patented the complex opening mechanism that slides the boot lid up and over the roof when opened, giving unhindered access to the luggage space.Initiale's luggage has been created by world-famous Louis Vuitton and is designed to compliment an exceptional vehicle. Louis Vuitton's new concept to accompany a concept car includes a large case containing an extra pliable bag, a medium-sized case and vanity case.Interior luxury - with assistance from ScotlandInside, Patrick Le Quement's Renault Design team have treated passenger space as they would a favoured living area - diffused light, generous amounts of space and four "variometric" seats clad in Scottish Bridge of Weir leather. Up front, the two seats can pivot 20 deg. Outwards to ease access, whereas in the rear a central console suspended beneath the fully-glazed panoramic roof allows passengers to watch films on laser disc whilst enjoying a glass of champagne.The moment the ignition key is turned, the wooden dashboard cover slides back to reveal Initiale's instrumentation and, in the centre, a keyboard allows control over on-board climate, hi-fi, telephone and driving aids.In terms of colour and trim clear tones and classical harmony are the order of the day - the frosted glass on instruments and meters, the natural tints, maple wood and beige leather blending with navy blue panels.High techonologyInitiale is contructed on a completely new platform and incorporates the drive-train of the Safrane biturbo (a four-wheel drive, twin turbocharged Safrane not available in the UK).The team at Renault Sport have developed a subdued version of the 3.5-litre V10 RS6 Formula 1 engine to give 392bhp at 8,000rpm and 360Nm of torque at 6,200rpm. Gearing of the six-speed sequential gearbox allows a theoretical top speed of 190mph. Initiale's road manners are boosted by an "intelligent" cruise control - a direct spin-off from Renault research carried out for the Prometheus programme - that slows and accelerates the car as it reacts to traffic speed. Auto Express Car Reviews Decent performance and smooth ride add to appeal of new Clio By Piers WardMarch 2006 Rating: The three-door version of Renault's capable new supermini, the Clio, has been in UK dealers since October, yet production of this variant has only just begun.Bosses expect the five-door Clio to make up a quarter of UK sales. Thankfully, the cute styling has been retained on the new machine, but the back is more upright, with a squared-off hatch to accommodate the extra doors.Inside, rear passengers get lots of headroom, although space for their legs is tight. While it's no worse than in many other superminis, taller occupants will feel cramped. However, there's plenty of room for luggage - at 288 litres, the boot capacity is exactly the same as the three-door's. Opt for the top-of-the-range Initiale trim and you get an extra storage compartment fitted as part of the parcel shelf. This zips open, and can be used to store flat objects, such as a first aid kit or map.As well as identical boot space, the expensive-feeling interior plastics are carried over from the three-door model. This Clio seems like a very grown-up car, and build quality can't be faulted - it's significantly more robust than most other superminis.Our Clio was powered by Renault's 1.6-litre engine, which is sourced from the larger M�gane. The unit produces 109bhp and 151Nm, 90 per cent of which is available from 2,000rpm.It certainly feels responsive, and the newcomer has no trouble keeping up with motorway traffic. However, at high cruising speeds the motor sounds a bit boomy. While refinement is impressive compared to the previous-generation model, there is more engine noise pres-ent than you would expect from such a high-quality car.The Renault is accomplished in all other areas. Ride quality is comfortable over most road surfaces, and it's only when you venture on to rougher back roads that the wheels transmit any vibrations back into the cabin. The steering is light enough for easy city use, although it feels artificial at speed due to a lack of feedback.However, in the quest for honours in the supermini class, it is build quality, interior space and styling that matter most. The latest version of the new Clio is hard to fault against these criteria - it's equally impressive whether it comes with three doors or five.
