Steve Walker Reports Under normal circumstances most people would never countenance the idea of MPV ownership. Then youre awoken early one morning by three kids trampolining on your bed and a large Labrador licking with your big toe. In this bewildering moment of epiphany, the realisation dawns that your household has outgrown your hatchback. From that point on, an MPV starts to look an increasingly sensible option. The problem here is that in their single track quest for practical perfection, many MPVs loose any semblance of sportiness or street credibility. Renaults Scenic does better than most on these scores but their Maxim special edition aims to soften the blow of MPV ownership that stage further. Build Comfort Depreciation Economy Equipment Handling Insurance Performance Styling Value The concern for many is that the act of buying an MPV will serve as the final nail in the coffin of their youth. The start of a life enslaved in vehicles bought for practical considerations at the expense of fun, style and desirability. Theres no doubt that MPVs can get pretty frumpy but at least Renault have tried to ensure that their Scenic retains a modicum of credibility. Its no Audi A3 mind but thought was evidently given to the way it looks and the way you feel about owning it. The Maxim special edition model in particular displays more dynamism than you might expect. The Maxim version isnt your average workaday MPV. Indeed, the Renault Scenic isnt. Of all the mini -MPVs currently available (now that Fiats Multipla has had its alien face lifted), Renaults offering is arguably the most distinctive to look at. The Scenics Dynamique trim level forms the sporty section of the Scenic range and its on this specification that the Maxim is based. Being a special edition, however, the Maxim is a little bit more special. It introduces 16" Louxor alloy wheels along with some high-end interior equipment including climate control, cruise control with an integral speed limiter and part-leather upholstery. Theres also a sliding centre storage unit to boost the Scenics already impressive quota of storage solutions and this takes the final total value of the Maxims extra features up to £1,150. As with all good special editions, Renault have pulled out all the stops to make the Maxim a strongly persuasive vehicle on financial grounds. That £1,150 of extra features comes at a premium of only £500 over the equivalent Dynamique model and that should be enough to spark some interest. Its available in both 5- seat (Scenic) and 7-seat (Grand Scenic) form with a range of engine options. Saliently, this engine line-up omits the entry-level 1.4-litre 16v unit that is offered in the wider Scenic range, thus underlining the Maxims sporty pretensions, however modest they may be. Buyers need not mourn the absence of the 1. 4-litre unit as with just 98bhp, this supermini engine is not best equipped for moving a vehicle of the Scenics size. "The Maxim special edition model in particular displays more dynamism than you might expect. " The powerplants that do make it to the Maxim line-up are the 115bhp 1.6-litre VVT and the 136bhp 2.0-litre VVT options, both of which are offered with manual or automatic transmission. Above these comes the 120bhp dCi diesel unit and the top of the range is occupied by the potent 165bhp 2. 0-litre turbocharged petrol engine. This most powerful engine endows the Scenic with an impressive turn of speed by MPV standards. Its a smooth and free-revving unit that delivers its power in a very progressive fashion. With it installed, a Scenic Maxim can do the 0-60mph sprint in 8. 6s. Not what youd expect from an MPV. Economy is obviously going to be more important to buyers in this sector and the diesel shines here with its 49mpg average, although the 1.6-litre and the normally aspirated 2. 0-litre petrol engines manage 39 and 35mpg respectively. Ride quality is possibly the best in class with the Scenic making short work of rutted A-roads and poorly surfaced motorways. Even on the optional seventeen-inch wheels, bump and thump through the suspension remains very muted. There is a trade off when it comes to handling, but Renault have probably judged the ride/handling balance wisely. Renaults Scenic rides on Megane running gear, offering five seats. Although the long wheelbase seven-seat Grand Scenic is also available in Maxim trim, most will settle for the regular model, offering as it does a usefully larger cabin than its predecessor. The wheelbase is up 105mm and the overall length stretches 125mm. Its a hefty 127mm wider and even stands a good deal taller. Height-wise its within a centimetre of the first generation Espace, but its a significant degree longer and wider while the cabin is massively more space efficient. How times change. The interior feels roomy enough, the clean lines and low dashboard adding to the airy feel. Legroom is especially generous in the back, especially when the rear seats have slid into their rearmost position. The central seating position in the back can be removed and the remaining two seats repositioned to allow more elbowroom but its not quite as slick as Fords diagonally sliding system. Aside from that minor niggle though, theres very little to fault the Scenic interior. There are storage cubbies in every conceivable nook and cranny as well as some you may need the user manual to find. Even the glovebox is cavernous. With the rear seats in position, luggage capacity has risen by 70-litres to a respectable 410 litres and loading is made simple by a glass tailgate window that opens independently. Renault confidently expected a full five star Euro-NCAP crash test result for the Scenic when it was launched and sure enough, once the dust had settled, one was awarded. Front, side and curtain airbags are fitted as standard to every variant and all berths are fitted with five-point seat belts. The purchase of an MPV neednt spell the end for your days of motoring enjoyment. The Renault Scenic Maxim obviously puts the needs of a family first with practical design, impressive space and attractive pricing but the sporty element to the package should help to console those who see their growing family as a ball and chain round the ankle of their motoring aspirations.
