Steve Walker ReportsIt wasnt so long ago that Megane was the word on every family hatch buyers lips. Renault really shook things up when they launched the car back in 2002, throwing established family car design conventions out the window in the process. Whether you loved or hated its ground-breaking styling, for a good few months at least, the prime position on UK roads was directly behind a Megane - so you could gaze in wonderment at its protruding rump. Since then, weve seen Renaults rivals respond. All-new versions of the Focus, Astra and Golf have diverted much of the Meganes limelight but a plan is afoot to get it back, one that centres around the Oasis special edition models. Build Comfort Depreciation Economy Equipment Handling Insurance Performance Styling Value The Oasis represents a bid by Renault to tug our memory cords and remind us that the Megane is still around. Its been a little lost recently amid the furore surrounding the launches of those aforementioned rivals but once the public have been reappraised of the Meganes qualities, normal service should be resumed. In tried and tested special edition style, the Oasis is based on an existing Megane model (the Expression) but it ups that cars value proposition by featuring more equipment for not a lot more money. The name Oasis isnt a particular reference to the swaggering Mancunian rockers or the desert watering hole but is sounds good enough with a Megane in front and looks OK on a Meganes behind. So it comes down to the toys. Oasis customers get everything that Expression customers get, so a 60-watt RDS CD-stereo occupies the centre console, as do controls for the air-conditioning system. Automatic headlamps and windscreen wipers also feature. Beyond this stuff, the Oasis equipment list gets more interesting. The extras in excess of Expression specification include a panoramic glass sunroof (you get a normal sunroof on the 3-door models) and the Renault Hands-Free entry system which does away with conventional door and ignition keys. Also included are electrically folding heated mirrors and an insurer-approved Thatcham Category 1 alarm system. A Renault Megane Oasis costs £300 more than an equivalent Megane Expression but the extra equipment included on the car would cost you £1,250 if you specified it from the options list. It obviously costs Renault a lot less than that to turn an Expression into an Oasis but if you want a Megane with a more opulent specification, this is a great way to get one. Renault have certainly got their moneys worth out of the Megane platform. Theyve produced everything from a folding hard-top coupe to a 7-seat MPV but the Oasis special editions only come in mere four different bodystyles. It comes down to choice between the 3-door and 5-door hatchbacks, the Sport Saloon 4-door and the Sport Tourer estate. Most prospective customers should be able to find what theyre after amongst that little lot and the breadth of the Oasis range is increased further by the availability of six engine and transmission options. "if you want a Megane with a more opulent specification, this is a great way to get one"True performance isnt put on the agenda by any of the Oasis powerplants, so this wont be the car for the enthusiastic driver. As is usually the case, however, an absence of performance denotes the presence of relative economy and all the units display a certain thriftiness. Things kick off with the 1.4-litre 16v unit that delivers a 98bhp output and 42mpg average fuel consumption. The 115bhp 1.6-litre option is usefully quicker and only marginally thirstier with its 41mpg average although, predictably, this is reflected in the £500 price premium. The diesel options are both more expensive than the petrols: the 86bhp 1.5-litre dCi is able to return a claimed 61mpg average economy figure but it comes in at £850 more expensive than the entry-level. The range-topper is the 106bhp version of the 1.5-litre dCi engine. It can manage an even more remarkable 60mpg and costs £550 more than the lesser oil-burner. The final dilemma centres around the manual or automatic transmission option. Both the 1.6-litre petrol and a 100bhp dCi diesel are offered with Renaults automatic gearbox. This does hurt economy slightly but it may make sense if you want to make easier progress in stop, start urban conditions. The auto box comes at a £1,000 premium. The one ace that the Megane still holds over its direct rivals is style. While many more recent arrivals in the mainstream family hatchback sector have kept it very conservative, the Renaults iconic hindquarters can still turn a head. The effect is obviously reduced if you opt for the Sport Saloon or Sport Tourer bodystyles which have different rear arrangements from the hatch but theyre still tidily penned cars and distinctive with it. The Meganes handling is biased towards comfort rather than dynamism but the build quality is impressive and the clever technology that has been built in tends to work. Genuine innovation is in evidence right around the Megane. Take Renaults anti-submarining airbag, a device which leaps forth from the seat cushion to protect the pelvis. This replaces the traditional (and some would say uncomfortable) hump at the front of the seat and is a neat solution that provides both comfort and unparalleled safety, effectively making it impossible to slide beneath the seatbelt in the event of an accident. Renaults unparalleled experience in the MPV market shines through, not only in terms of passenger space which is excellent - but also in the provision of multifarious cubbies, boxes and pockets. Theres a hatch in the floor to stow valuables, storage boxes between both front and rear seats and even a chilled glove compartment. Priced between £12,200 and £14,750, the Megane Oasis models offer a degree of choice thats not always available with special edition cars. You get a panoramic sun roof and air con., electrically folding, colour coded door mirros, keyless car (just have the key in your pocket and it unlocks when you touch the handle, etc.)Although the key being a square credit card shape has its disadvantages - like when in your pocket, it is a lot more bulkier.Front fog lights and an arm rest come as standard too. It's got some nice features for a low trim level.I particularily like the fuel economy. I am very heavy right footed and still manage around 50mpg, and with the 60 litre tank can see easily 650 miles between fill ups. The panoramic sun roof is grear; gives the car a more airy feel, and at night there are blinds for the roof to close off outside, giving a warmer feel in the car.The automatic wipers are a bit deceiving. As far as I have worked out., they don't come on automatically if it starts to rain on your journey. You have to activate intermittant, and it decides how fast to put the wipers, and the sensitivity can be changed with another switch. I find it is never acurate and water would lie on the window too long before being wiped when it decides it needs a slow wipe cycle. Auto head lights are great, although, I think if one car should have them, all cars should, as when I drive other cars, I would sometimes forget to turn the lights on. The auto lights can be deactivated, and if you turn on the lights manually, and open the door, they turn off, rather than emiiting a beeping noise, which is the case in other cars.I have only had the car since the end of October, reliability has been great, but has yet to be seen. (This is only my second review, so still pretty new to Ciao) Nar 09.01.2006 21:47 A good start up review here - I have a feeling the Auto wipers dont mean that they are rain sensored, but come on automatically if reverse is selected. Do you get split level seats on this edition? I know Renault in the past were stingy in their medium hatch class when special editions were launched against basic versions including keeping the single rear back bench in the back of the car. How does it drive? Is it noisy? Is refinement good? What about fuel economy? Since you're leasing it, what do you normally drive and how does it compare? What made you go for the Megane? What's visibility like, especially that rear hatch bulge at the back? As you can see, more info needed here, but as I said at the start, this is a good review.
