It was launched at the 2001 Geneva Motorshow to replace the already-discontinued Safrane and has nothing in common with the 1990s concept car of the same name. The name Vel Satis is a composite of elements of the words Velocity and Satisfaction. A specially prepared Vel Satis was used by the President of France until 2009. [edit] Overview The Vel Satis is distinguished by its unusual height (13 cm higher than a Safrane), which benefits interior space but results in proportions some viewed as being ungainly. In September 2002, CAR magazine described it as "ugly and very French."[1] Design commentator Stephen Bayley decided that the problem with the car was that it was "not ugly enough." Renault's design chief Patrick Le Quement explained that the car was intended to have physical presence rather than aspiring to classical elegance which Audi, for example, did well enough. Renault's stated intention was to target less conformist, selective modern customers who were identified as "distancing themselves from the conventional saloon." [1] The Vel Satis was an attempt to redefine the prestige car in French terms. It had a five-star EuroNCAP safety rating and was available with a variety of engines: 4-cylinder, 16-valve, turbocharged 2.0-litre Nissan-sourced 24-valve, 3.5-litre V6 4-cylinder, 16-valve, 2.2-litre direct-injection turbodiesel Isuzu-sourced 24-valve 3.0-litre direct-injection turbodiesel The Vel Satis shares its "platform" (chassis, powertrain, assembly process) with the Laguna and Espace IV and was produced on the same assembly line in Sandouville, France. Reviews of the car were critical of its ride and its handling but noted the car was quiet under most conditions. "The gearbox is prone to considerable hunting in its quest to deliver power, at which point engine noise intrudes more than anticipated, and the change itself is by no means the smoothest in the class."[2] The reviewer noted that the V6 diesel engine was better suited to the car's "lounge lizard pretensions" but that "all of which conspires to make the car´s ride quality even more of a disappointment." The ride quality was described as feeling "over-tough at pottering speeds, but displays a tendency to disintegrate into chop and judder when confronted with anything other than the smoothest of surfaces." [1] Renault UK decided not to develop a right-hand drive version of the facelifted 2005 year model Vel Satis, as sales of the model had been poor in the United Kingdom since launch. Although 3,500 sales were predicted, only a third of these were achieved. This came only two years after the Avantime coupé/MPV, which was equally ambitious in its design, was discontinued by Renault. The 2006 model year Vel Satis features a reprofiled front grille section with less chrome, giving it an appearance similar to more recent concept cars from the brand. Renault cancelled the Vel Satis production on August 27, 2009. The newly-revealed 2011 Renault Latitude is considered a replacement in Europe and other nations because of its similar dimensions and class to the Vel Satis. The French firm's unloved Vel Satis may not be the most obvious choice for businessmen on the move, but there are benefits. Firstly, it looks like no other competitor - and secondly, rampant depreciation ensures early examples cost less than a brand new family car. As well as that unique styling, what makes the Renault desirable is its luxurious, lavish cabin. Standard equipment levels are equally impressive, while there is indulgent space for five. Ignore petrol models unless they're cheap and go for a diesel. The 2.2 dCi is fine and will return 40mpg. But the 3.0-litre V6 dCi is a stunner, providing speed, economy and refinement. Look out for electrical niggles, and be ready to hunt as used examples are rare. Checklist* Interior: numerous faults can arise here, so check the climate and cruise control systems. Also, examine electric windows, auto wipers, switches and instrument panels.* Engines: fuel injection sensors can fail on 2.2-litre dCi. ECU and electronic parking brake faults are common - as is keycard start trouble, but a 'spare' is hidden in the card.* Gearboxes: diesels' clutches wear fast and gearshifts stiffen - new boxes are often needed on the mechanically identical Laguna. V6 models available with reliable auto only.* Bodywork: investigate bumpers for parking damage as the Vel Satis is large and scrapes are common. Lack of model identification makes it difficult to decipher trim levels.* Tyres: most regular fault concerns tyre pressure sensor display in the dashboard. Spurious messages are very frequent, and punctures sometimes demand a new sensor, costing ΂£75, including fitting. Driving Impressions THIS is a tall car with soft suspension, and certainly isn't built for twisty roads. The Vel Satis is capable enough, but its natural environment is straight tarmac - the bumpier the better if you want to be impressed by its smooth ride. The controls are light and easy, too, and the diesel engines provide effortless motoring. While the 2.0-litre petrol is a little gruff, the 3.5 V6 is fun, albeit thirsty. Enormous front seats adjust in every direction, with the backrest splitting for optimum comfort. But the car's biggest strength is its refinement. Glass's View Despite its distinctive styling, new and used car buyers have failed to identify with the Vel Satis. It competes in a sector of the market that's been diminishing steadily for a number of years, and as a result it has sold in very small numbers. Its limited availability has done little to keep values firm, either. However, rapid depreciation means good news for the used car customer who is looking for excellent value for money. The firm's ambitious move into the luxury market with the Vel Satis has certainly raised eyebrows. GPS aerial failed, so the sat nav didn't work.Climate control panel illumination gone (fixed myself). General comments? What a car this is.I've only had the car six months, my aunt has just bought it off me (need to raise funds for the Avantime) and I will miss it A LOT.What a bargain it was, took a chance and bought it from an auction for £1800. Obviously for that price I expected a dog, but I got a princess! It's the flagship "Initiale" model which means Carminat Satellite Navigation, full cream leather (heated and electric adjustment), Automatic Xenon headlights, climate control, Cabasse 6 CD Changer, ESP, Parking Sensors, need I go on? But the best feature of all is the voice synthesizer. A nice posh woman kindly announces any faults (none yet), fuel level low, doors open etc. Has attracted a lot of comments!Now the looks. If you're reading this, you're probably a fan, as I am. Viewed from a distance, the car is absolutely gorgeous. The flowing french lines, 18" Villa d'Este alloy wheels and satin chrome detailing uphold Renault's excellent reputation for daring design. However, I have to confess I've found one or two angles which don't work!The Interior. Maple wood, beige leather, automatic everything... it's like driving around in a luxury bedroom. However, creaky plastics and a few flimsy bits of trim remind you you're in a Renault!The 3.0 dV6 automatic is an Isuzu sourced engine... so it's bulletproof. I can't see why anybody would choose the 3.5 V6 petrol. Yes, on cold mornings, there's a bit of volume outside the car, but inside you would NEVER know it's a diesel, it's very very quiet. The power and torque leaves you wanting for nothing, and does a great job of propelling this beast along while returning 35+ MPG (more than my Mégane!!!) Now Handling. The Vel Satis doesn't do corners! It can be compared to a boat. It wallows and pitches like the Titanic, but it's all part of the character! Instead it floats along, ironing out every imperfection as it glides along the road.Now for the dodgy issue of parts. Good news, the Vel Satis is based on the Laguna II, so that's no problem.I'm really going to miss the "Beast" as my friends like to call it, but I just have to have an Avantime!
