Engineered for driving pleasure it combines the fuel consumption of an engine of its size, with the power of 1.4-litre block and the torque of a 1.6-litre power plant Developed from the 1.2 16V 75hp block, the new TCe 100 engine is equipped with a low inertia turbo that ensures minimal lag thanks to its small diameter turbine and compressor. The marriage of a small cubic capacity and a low inertia turbo ensures lively response from low revs, while maximum torque is available from low speeds and remains available across a broad rev-band. The turbocharger includes an "overpower" feature, which temporarily boosts power output in 2nd, 3rd, 4th gears at engine speeds of more than 4,500rpm (5hp extra torque). Fuel efficient With a cubic capacity of 1,149cc, this small engine enables Twingo, Modus and Clio to claim record combined cycle fuel consumption of 5.9 litres/100km (47.8 mpg), a figure to which its low idling speed of 650rpm contributes. Powered by this engine, the Clio boasts the lowest CO2 emissions of its class (i.e 100 hp pertrol engines), namely 137g/km. Respect for the environment With CO2 emissions homologated at 140g/km, the TCe 100 engine contributed to the commitment made by Renault to achieve average CO2 emissions for its range of 140g/km by 2008. This engine was also a response to the anticipated revival in interest for petrol engines compared with small diesels when the Euro5 standard came into effect in Europe. With the 130hp output of a 1.8-litre power plant and the 190Nm torque of a 2-litre engine, this new 1.4-litre unit yields C-segment CO2 emission levels that are just below those of a 1.6-litre engine. Like its smaller sibling, the TCe 100, the TCe 130 combines a small engine with a low-inertia turbocharger that is responsive even at low engine speeds. Shared expertise Its very low fuel consumption and environmental credentials ensure that the TCe engine anticipates the potential resurgence of interest in petrol engines that the introduction of the Euro 5 emission standard is lkely to trigger. Developed as part fo the Renault-Nissan Alliance the TCe 130 is a perfect illustration of the synergies between the partners' engineering expertise: Nissan's lies in developing petrol engines, while Renault has built up experience in combustion and turbo charging. Reducing fuel consumption The new TCe 130 has an aluminum pump and a single-flow turbo compressor. The profile of its inlet ports has been redesigned compared with those of the normally-aspirated engine. The new ports create a swirling inflow, which mixes fuel and air more evenly, so improving combustion. Thanks to this tumbling flow of air the combustion flame propagates more efficiently, improving torque at low revs without impairing performance at higher engine speeds. A continuous camshaft angle variator at the intake port improves performance at all engine speeds and helps reduce fuel consumption. Hardly ground-breaking stuff, but then, neither were the changes. This was very much a case of polish what's there, rather than start again.Mind you, the Clio didn't need much work. It was already one of our favourite superminis. This has been enhanced in the latest one, with a more modern front end, restyled rear lights and subtle tweaks to the trim line. This uses an 1149cc engine mated to a tiny turbo, giving a super-impressive 100bhp power output. Yet the motor can also average nearly 48mpg - exactly the same as the slower non-turbo 1.2. Thus see it as a tempting blend of performance, affordability, economy and low insurance costs - particularly for those who find rival 1.4-litres too much. Renault's also pitching it at those downsizing from larger family models: similar space, good performance but less cost. It's the obvious choice for those seeking alternatives to the Ford Fiesta and Vauxhall Corsa, ranking alongside the Peugeot 207 for buyers' affections. Renault puts plenty of emphasis on usability with the Clio, too; even the three-door is a well laid out thing.RenaultSport Clios top the line-up, of course. These are the halo cars, but shouldn't suggest the rest of the range is too extreme. What's more, for 2009, Renault has also simplified the trim line-up, making it less baffling than before. Mind you, this does lead to some beefy-looking list prices...Image © RenaultWhat does it do well?The Clio is exceedingly easy to drive, particularly with this turbo motor. It pulls well at all speeds, with good punch helping minimise gearchanging. Not that the light, slick gearbox or progressive clutch are awkward - they complement effortless, direct steering, too. It may be 'only a 1.2', but this Clio is never left struggling for go.It also handles tidily, taking a little of the zippy feel found in the RenaultSport. It matches the semi-sporty appearance of the test car's Dynamique trim, and shouldn't disappoint enthusiastic drivers. It is also extremely stable and assured at speed, with 'big car' confidence. It's well up to the motorway slog.Image © RenaultWhat doesn't it do well?Initially, the ride can feel rather stiffly sprung and irritable. In time, you learn it actually has depth, but it's not as initially absorbent as buyers of older Renaults may expect. Similarly, the firm seats are rather flat and high-set, giving an impression of unsupportiveness that proves false on the go. The brakes take some time to acclimatise to, as the pedal is very light and grabby. We also found, like many modern superminis, it feels 'big' when parking; slightly restricted visibility doesn't help here. Incredible, really, that we're saying parking sensors have become a must-fit option for a supermini...Image © RenaultWhat's it like to live with?The roomy interior, with its high seats and good layout, is a nice place to spend time. As this is a 'posher' Clio, it gets a nicer soft-touch dash than cheaper models, with general trim quality and layout showing a high standard. It's plain in places, but it's all very easy to use. There's an OK boot and fairly good stowage in the cabin. There are odd gripes, though: in three-door models, the doors are very heavy to pull shut, and rather wide when open. A five-door model may be easier to use in tight spaces. We also reckon relocating the rear fog lamps in the rear bumper will lead to breakages.Image © RenaultHow green is it?There's no faulting the economy, given the performance. 48mpg is very good for something that can hit 60mph in 11.1 seconds. Mind you, there is an argument that this is only impressive because the non-turbo engine is relatively inefficient. Some base petrol rivals can top 50mpg now...As an 'eco2' Renault, the firm commits to high levels of recyclability in this Clio. It's also produced in a factory that has low waste levels, while it naturally has low levels of CO2 as well. What's more, it has the punch of a small diesel, without the particulate emissions - a real clean-driving bonus in cities.Image © RenaultWould we buy it?The 1.2-litre TCe Clio is a fine car that deserves more recognition than it gets (the firm doesn't even stick a 'TCe' badge on the outside!). By fitting a turbo to a small petrol engine, Renault has given buyers a hi-tech and very satisfying solution for getting good performance and economy, with low emissions and running costs.It's also cheaper to buy than a diesel model, and comes with all the minor enhancements Renault's integrated into the latest Clio. Alongside the hot Clios, it's easy to overlook, but that doesn't mean it's not a very able supermini.
