Priorities, of course, but people now want state of the art communications, design that utilises each millimetre, engines that make every last sip of fuel move them that extra yard. And when you can ‘shake that ass' as well, you're onto a winner. That's case with the Renault Megane Sport Tourer, the fifth model to be launched in the Megane family after the Hatch, Coupe, Scenic and Grand Scenic - and in my view the best looking of the lot. It's a range that caters for close on every preference and pocket, the powertrains comprising five petrol and as many dCi diesel units, with a power spread of 86 to 180bhp. The tested 1.4 Dynamique Tom Tom, middle version of the five trim grades, featured Renault's latest petrol engine the TCe 130, which stands for Turbo Control efficiency. It's a powerplant that ideally demonstrates the strides made in downsizing, courtesy of modified air intake ports. The output of 130bhp means that the 1.4-litre unit's power matches the amount typically produced by a 1.8-litre engine, while the torque, or pulling power, figure rivals that of a 2.0-litre unit. Upshot is better fuel economy, in this case an average 42.8mpg, useful performance and decent ‘green' efficiency of 153g/km. Running and servicing costs are also among the best in class with oil and filter changes required at 18,000 miles or every two years and air filter and spark plugs at 36,000 miles or every four years. The principal reason for people opting for estate models is the extra space they offer, another area in which the Megane Sport Tourer delivers. Better still, it does it in style – the car cutting a serious dash with its elegant lines, raked rear screen, rounded rear-end and aluminium effect roof rails. The Sport Tourer has a slightly longer wheelbase than the Megane hatch, something reflected in the large, flat and easily accessible split level boot with its low sill height. And the rear seat cushions can be lifted up against the back of the front seats to create a flat load floor. If there's a criticism of the available space it's that with the front seats slid fully back there's insufficient space for three adults in the rear. Inside, the cabin has a fresh, clean design with firm, durable seating and upholstery, plenty of stowage and a central armrest that folds down to reveal a pair of cupholders. All versions come with electronic stability control, front and rear curtain airbags, air-con, a CD sound system with remote fingertip control, keyless entry and ignition plus ISOFIX child seat mounts. The Dynamique Tom Tom and Privilege Tom Tom versions also have a built-in Carminat sat-nav that can be updated from a home computer and includes traffic info, alternative routes, speed limits and speed camera locations.
