Andy Enright ReportsSomewhere beneath the mushrooming GATSO cameras, general post-Rover malaise and choking congestion, we British motorists have got something to be proud about. We still buy more sporting cars than Germany, France or even Italy. When European car manufacturers launch a sporting model, its to the UK they turn, recognising that the British public is the most knowledgeable and demanding audience. Renault were one of the first manufacturers to cotton onto this fact and the list of sporting hatches theyve given us is long and illustrious including such luminaries as the 5 Gordini, the GT Turbo, the Clio Williams and latterly the Clio 182 Cup. Now theres an even more focused version for us to sample the Clio Renaultsport 182 Trophy. Build

{'rating_Value'}.gif'> Fully 50 per cent of all of the Dieppe Renaultsport factorys output ends up on these shores and the 182 Trophy, launched at the 2005 Monaco Grand Prix, will be no exception. Although Fernando Alonso and Giancarlo Fisichella may at the time have been rather underwhelmed by the 182bhp power output compared to the 800bhp plus they usually have at their disposal, its still enough to provide plenty of fireworks. That said, whereas many hot hatches are defined by their engines, Renault have been in this game long enough to know that big power isnt the target they should be aiming at. With bigger and more complex engines come a number of other design compromises. Instead, the French company has concentrated on honing the things that really matter. The Clio Cup showed that if you cut costs and complexity, shaved weight and maximised driver involvement, youd be on to a certain winner and the Trophy is in many ways a Cup with as much va-va voom as the engineers at Dieppe could shoehorn in."Thing of the 182 Cup as a madras and the 182 Trophy as a vindaloo"Take a Cup and paint it in bright Capsicum Red. Next add a few Trophy logos and then purloin the rear spoiler from the wild Clio Renaultsport V6 255 thats sadly now longer with us. Fit a pair of hip hugging black Recaro Sport Trendline bucket seats, guaranteed to drop the seat of your pants 10mm closer to the bitumen and add a super tactile leather and rubber steering wheel. Bolt on a set of Renaultsport-branded door sill finishers for a touch of bling and a numbered plaque detailing which of the 500 production run your Trophy is and thats pretty much it when it comes to the aesthetics. Nows where the real fun starts. Although Renault have wisely left power output alone, theyve further honed what the Clio 182 Cup always did best, namely demolish corners with gleeful abandon. The suspension is based on the Cup set-up. As a reminder, over the normal Renaultsport 182, this has lower ride height, stiffer springs (20% front, 15% rear), re-rated dampers (+20% front, +10% rear), strengthened front wheel hub carriers and revised steering geometry. The Trophy suspension is lowered a further 10mm at the front with shorter springs. The dampers are supplied by Sachs Race Engineering and have a unique damping force/velocity curve. Normally only used in competition cars, these dampers cost 10 times more than a conventional road car damper and feature a remote reservoir to accommodate nearly 50% of the oil and gas. This remote reservoir liberates enough space to package a thicker and therefore stiffer damper rod, thus increasing camber compliance. The increased oil volume brings better thermal stability, to enable the damper to maintain optimal performance at all times. The space liberated allows the hydraulic components and damper valving to work more effectively. Another unusual feature of the damper is that a hydraulic bump stop replaces the usual physical elastometric one. This gives a much more progressive stiffness rate once the bump stop starts to work and thus allows a lower ride height without compromising bump travel. The objective of the lower ride height is to improve the turn in and reduce understeer. Overall, these chassis modifications give the Trophy much improved damping control at all speeds, improved traction and reduced body movements (roll and pitch). This is particularly noticeable on poor quality roads i.e. typical English B roads. The wheels are Speedline Turini in anthracite (the same design as those used on the Renaultsport 172 Cup, though with a different offset and colour). These wheels save 1.3kg each and this reduction in the unsprung weight further improves the wheel control and therefore handling. There arent many more enjoyable hot hatches than this one when the road gets twisty. An open B road is hugely enjoyable, though if it gets any tighter than that, the slightly obstreperous gearchange can get in the way a little. Thats a pity because Renaults engineers have revised the induction system to improve response at low and medium speeds, tweaks which appear to have done the trick: power is always there, instantly, just when you want it. The engines quieter and greener too. Fuel consumption? Well, as ever with these cars, it depends just how much youre able to restrain yourself. Renault quotes 34. 9mpg on the combined cycle but if you achieve that too often, then you probably shouldnt have bought this car in the first place. The Clio Renaultsport 182 Trophy represents the pinnacle of affordable hot hatches. Distilling years of know how into this ultimate shopping rocket will go down a storm with British drivers. After all, the figures go to prove we know a good thing when we see it. Seriously, french cars aren't great... I prefer german ones BUT believe it or not we're better in competition. The most mouth-watering Renault Megane Trophy ever conceived has been unveiled at the 2008 Paris Motor Show.
Built for the World Series By Renault saloon car championship, the Renault Megane Trophy is fitted with a 360bhp 3.5-litre V6 engine.
View our Renault Megane Trophy slide show The engine is fitted in the middle of the car, behind the driver, for the best possible weight distribution.
A six-speed gearbox with steering wheel-mounted paddle shifters allows gear changes which take less than one second.
During 2009 the rakish Renault Megane Trophy will battle it out in the prestigious one-make racing series which takes in circuits all over Europe.
Its stunning bodywork is based on the new Megane Coupe and sits low to the ground and is incredibly wide, allowing its chassis and tyres to provide immense cornering grip.
Aerodynamics have been improved by more than 40 per cent over the 2007 Renault Megane Trophy, helping to suck the car to the ground and improve lap times.
View our Renault Megane Trophy slide show Races last for around 40 minutes, with two being held in each racing weekend – and at least one pit stop is mandatory.
The latest Renault Megane road car has also made its debut at the Paris Motor Show featuring updated looks and greater economy.
Four models in the Megane range will offer carbon dioxide emissions of less than 120g/km, which means tax will cost £35 or less. Star cars also unveiled in Paris include the awesome Lamborghini Estoque, Volkswagen Golf GTI, Ferrari California, Seat Ibiza Cupra, BMW X1 and Ford Ka. Paris Motor Show – what is the star car? SHOP Search evo REGISTER LOGIN Free Newsletter Car Reviews: Long Term Tests Renault Clio Trophy Harry Metcalfe's four-year-old Renault Clio Trophy is still earning its keep - in the hands of his 13-year-old son By Harry Metcalfe June 2009 It’s very peculiar handing your car over to your 13-year-old son…My Clio Trophy last appeared in evo when I was running a Clio 197 as my main long-term car, and it proved a constant irritant to Renault at the time as I thought the older car was so much more enjoyable to drive than the new one. That’s also why the Trophy is still around some two years later, as I’m sure that it, and the Clio 182 on which it is based, will go on to be all-time greats, much in the same way the Peugeot 205 GTI has proved to be. So this one’s a keeper. At the moment the Trophy is earning its keep by being the car my 13-year-old son, Charlie, uses when we go along to events organised by the Under 17 Car Club. The idea of this unique club is to prepare youngsters for driving on the public road by teaching them how to drive safely at private venues. Kids have to be 13 before they are allowed to join, but if you fancy giving it a go it’s best to get registered as early as possible as there’s quite a waiting list. Visit www.u17cc.org for more details. While Charlie thought the Zonda would be the perfect car to learn to drive in, I reckoned the Trophy might be better to start off with. Small dimensions, good visibility, a beefy engine (so less chance of stalling) and four seats (a club requirement when starting out) seemed to make it the perfect choice. Others seemed to have had the same idea as there were plenty of hot hatches present, although one dad (an evo reader) got accused of child cruelty for bringing along his new, left-hand-drive Ford Mustang for his petite 13-year-old daughter to have her first driving experience in!The first meet is all about getting your Grade 5 certificate. To pass you need to show an instructor that you can adjust the mirrors and set up your driving position correctly, then prove that you have good clutch control, can change gear and can do an emergency stop. It’s very peculiar driving to a venue and then handing your car over to your 13-year-old son for the rest of the day. They soon pick it up, though, and most of the kids were reverse parking by the end of the day.The Clio worked fine at the first event, but driving to the following meet (held at Castle Combe) the Trophy felt wrong, corkscrewing at the front over bumps and not its usual, dynamic self. It was obvious the front dampers weren’t right, the one on the drivers’ side in particular not working as it should. It didn’t stop us driving on the day, but it was annoying all the same.Back home I checked the excellent www.cliotrophy.co.uk forum and, sure enough, other owners were suffering the same sudden front damper failure. Now, on the Trophy all the dampers are ultra-trick Sachs motorsport items, and while they work well, the downside is their eye-watering cost – a new front damper from Renault costs a ludicrous £1265! However, the upside of them being proper motorsport dampers is that they’re designed to be rebuilt rather than binned when they fail. The main UK service centre for Sachs is BG Motorsport Ltd (01327 855200), based at Silverstone, so all I had to do was remove the dampers from the car and drop them off to be overhauled.Thankfully the Trophy’s suspension struts are easy to remove – not much harder than changing a wheel – and I soon discovered what was wrong: the offside front damper had lost its gas, while the nearside one was showing a slight oil leak. These trick dampers may give the Trophy its acclaimed handling qualities, but it seems the seals on the separate oil/gas reservoirs aren’t very good at keeping road grime and especially salt out of the working parts. I’ll report back on how the rebuild goes next month.
